Stoa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stoa (plural, stoae or stoƦ) in Ancient Greek architecture; covered walkways or porticos, commonly for public usage.
The Painted Porch (stoa poikile), erected during the 3rd century BC, was located on the north side of the Ancient Agora of Athens, and was where Zeno of Citium taught Stoicism.
The Stoa Poikile was decorated by fresco painter and sculptor Mikon of Athens in collaboration with Polygnotos of Thasos such as the celebrated Battle of Marathon.

The STOA and ISPM models have the same purpose: to predict whether a solar event will cause an interplanetary shock that will reach Earth and, if so, the time of arrival and strength of the shock.
Based on the empirical studies of Lepping and Chao, (1976), STOA uses a cosine function to account for longitudinal dependence of the shock geometry in the ecliptic plane.
STOA allows for a radially-variable background solar wind, which is uniform in heliolongitude.

The Stoa [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
The Stoa Poecile or "Painted Stoa" was a building in Athens where Zeno of Citium met his followers and taught.
However, the Stoa Poecile was primarily the meeting place of ordinary people, beggars, fishmongers, entertainers, and others selling their wares or merely escaping the heat of a summer's day.
Zeno's reasons for using the Stoa Poecile are unknown, but one may speculate that the depictions of virtue - so important in Stoic ethics - in many of the paintings that adorned the building may have had some part in his decision.

Later stoas were often immense, running to two stories, each with a colonnade of a different order and having a ridged roof supported on internal colonnades; rows of shops or offices lined the back wall, which was sometimes decorated with paintings.
Such stoas surrounded the agora or marketplace of every large city and were used for public meetings.
The Stoa Poecile on the north side of the agora of Athens was the favorite meeting place of the philosopher Zeno of Citium; hence his followers are called Stoics and his system Stoicism.

 Stoa of Eumenes, Athens
Between the Odeion of Herodes Atticus and the Theater of Dionysos is the Stoa of Eumenes, built by King Eumenes II of Pergamon (197-160 B.C.), who not only erected magnificent buildings in his own city (Great Altar of Pergamon) but also sought to do honor to Athens by the building of this stoa.
Since the stoa was built against the slope of the hill, it was protected by a retaining wall supported by piers and round arches; the arcades, originally faced with marble, can still be seen.
In front of the east end of the Stoa of Eumenes are the foundations of the Monument of Nikias, erected in 320 B.C. to commemorate Nikias' victory as choregos.

Thus Stoa's music, while never coming across as totally unfamiliar in form in theway that, say, avant-garde modern classical or Japanese experimental noise does, is instead a potent and intoxicating amalgam of familiar styles presented in a totally fresh context.
Nonetheless, when he speaks of Stoa and of the ideas behind his music, it soon becomes obvious that he has caught onto the 'art as catharsis' technique, using Stoa as a means to grapple with the numerous problems of existence which he seems determined to confront.
Stoa's third studio release has been a long time in coming - over three years, in fact - but is now not too far from seeing the light of day.

 Royal Stoa, Agora
It was long thought that the Royal Stoa (Stoa Basileios) was identical with the Stoa of Zeus, but it has now been located in the new excavation area north of the Piraeus railroad.
The Royal Stoa was the seat of the Archon Basileus, who took over the cultic functions of the earlier kings.
Among these functions was the trial of offenders accused of asebeia (impiety, godlessness); and accordingly this stoa may have been the scene of Socrates' trial in 399 B.C., when he was condemned to death by drinking hemlock, after defending himself against charges of impiety and the corruption of youth in the "Apology" recorded by Plato.

 Stoicism [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
The term "Stoicism" derives from the Greek word "stoa," referring to a colonnade, such as those built outside or inside temples, around dwelling-houses, gymnasia, and market-places.
Thus in the market-place at Athens the stoa poikile (Painted Colonnade) was decorated with Polygnotus's representations of the destruction of Troy, the fight of the Athenians with the Amazons, and the battles of Marathon and Oenoe.
Zeno of Citium taught in the stoa poikile in Athens, and his adherents accordingly obtained the name of Stoics.
