Stobi was an ancient town of Paionia, later conquered by Macedon, and later still incorporated into the Roman province of Macedonia Salutaris (now in the Republic of Macedonia).
Stobi along with the rest of Paeonia was conquered by the kingdom of Macedon.
Stobi is one of are a small number of towns from the late ancient and old Christian period that kept a large number of mosaics.

The town of Stobi developed from a small Paionian settlement established as early as the Archaic period, and covered an area of about 2.5 hectares located on the northern side of a hilly terrace.
The Stobi coinage workshop was active in the period between the reign of Emperor Vespasian (69 - 79) to that of Elagabalus (218 - 222).
Stobi was reconstructed in the IV century, but was again devastated during the invasions of Attila's Huns, and subsequently during the invasion of Ostrogoths lead by Theodoric in 479 A.D. The Christian community revived the town at the end of the V century, and the life continued.

Livy (39.53.16) referred to Stobi, and the town figured prominently in his account of the north campaigns of Philip V of Macedonia in the 2nd century B.C. Stobi became a municipium during the early Roman Empire and minted its own coins (denars) at least from the reign of Titus to that of Elagabulus (69-222).
Stobi was an especially flourishing community during the 5th century when Johannes Stobaeus resided there and a number of palatial structures, public and private, were erected or remodeled and lavishly decorated.

Today, besides the mosaics discovered in nartex, some fresco fragments have been found there on the northern and western walls of the church, thought to have originated from the fifth and sixth century A.D. One of the most representative buildings in Stobi is the Pertenius palace, built in the fifth century.
There are different opinions on the period of construction of the amphitheatre in Stobi.
