There are still the remains of the Stockbridge and Brothertown Indians in the County occupying their well tilled farms.
This County is wholly in the Green Bay land district, and entries must be made at the land offices at Menasha.

During the removal era (the Removal Act was passed in 1830), the objective of the federal government was to remove Indian tribes to lands in the West beyond the boundaries of white settlements in exchange for their territory in the eastern United States.
After white citizens pressured the government to open the Calumet County farmlands for settlement, the government proposed that the Tribe be relocated west of the Mississippi River.
The treaty acknowledged that a majority of the Stockbridge and Munsee Tribe were adverse to removing to Minnesota and preferred a new location in Wisconsin "to resume agricultural pursuits, and gradually to prepare for citizenship." Id.

In Wisconsin, they were later joined by Munsees who had moved from their homeland in southeastern New York and northeastern Pennsylvania to Canada after the Revolutionary War.
Although many Stockbridge adjusted well to life in New York, their leader Hendrick Aupaumut still felt that the tribe should be farther removed from Whites to escape their influence.
Although the land treaties with the Stockbridge, Brothertown, and Oneida were disputed by the Menominee and Ho-chunk, the Stockbridge in Indiana and New York began moving to Wisconsin, settling along the Fox River near present-day Kaukauna.

 Ambrose Delos DeLand (1841 - 1917)
Ambrose Delos DeLand was born in Chautauqua county, New York, March 30, 1841 and nine years later came with his parents to Stockbridge, Calumet county, Wisconsin, the trip being made by wagon and the DeLand family being the first white settlers of Calumet county.
At the former place he was married, May 27, 1863, to Miss Mary Swett, a native of Monroe County, N.Y. Her parents, John W. and Hannah D. (Scribner) Swett, came to this county in 1846 and located on a farm in Lima Township, being among the pioneer settlers.
At the organization of the Wisconsin Dairymen's Association, he became a member of that society, and in 1877 was chosen as its President.

The Stockbridge originally lived in western Massachusetts and moved to north central New York between 1783 and 1786 to form a new Christian community near the Oneida.
Hendrick Aupaumut, a Stockbridge sachem (leader), realized the tribe needed to leave New York to evade the negative influences of settlers, and he chose to relocate the Stockbridge to Indiana near the Miami tribe.
The Stockbridge in Indiana and New York began moving to Wisconsin, settling along the Fox River near present-day Kaukauna.

Access: From the intersection of State Highway 55 and County Highway E in Stockbridge, go south on Highway 55 2.6 miles, then east on County Highway F 0.8mile, then north on Ledge Road 0.5 mile to the south boundary.
The forest is dominated by large sugar maple, American beech, and basswood along with white oak and contains numerous savanna grasses and forbs.
Stockbridge Ledge Woods is owned by the DNR and was designated a State Natural Area in 2002.

Entrance to Calumet County Park is between Sherwood and Stockbridge on State Rt.
This is a small county park which makes for a short ride.
If you want to stretch out your ride their is a connecter trail along the North end of the park next to the lake that leads to High Cliff State Park.
