Stockbridge-Munsee Community During the removal era (the Removal Act was passed in 1830), the objective of the federal government was to remove Indian tribes to lands in the West beyond the boundaries of white settlements in exchange for their territory in the eastern United States. The treaty acknowledged that a majority of the Stockbridge and Munsee Tribe were adverse to removing to Minnesota and preferred a new location in Wisconsin "to resume agricultural pursuits, and gradually to prepare for citizenship." Naturally, this meant that many of her pupils were Native Americans and poor whites who had never before been able to afford the luxury of schooling.
