In 1931 the new observatory at Saltsjöbaden in south Stockholm was inaugurated.
The Brera Astronomical Observatory was founded in 1764 by Ruggero Guiseppe Boscovich, S.J. (1711-1787) in the Brera Palace, in the centre of the city of Milan, which was, at that time, under the Austrian rule.
The Observatory reached the highest renown at the end of the 18th and in the second half of the 19th centuries, especially thanks to the excellent studies of Barnaba Oriani (1752-1832) and Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli (1835-1910).

 Overview of the Observatory
The Observatory at the Observatory Hill was established 160 years ago, in 1834.
The Observatory at the University of Helsinki has a central position in Finnish astronomy today, as it has had for over one-and-a-half centuries: it is the largest of the three university-level astronomy research institutes in the country.
The Observatory is responsible for the astronomical part of the Finnish Almanac, which is the yearly best-seller with a print-run of over 400 000 copies.

The main organizers of the Olympiad were the Euro-Asian Astronomical Society (directly by the Olympic Coordinating Council), the Swedish section of the European Association for Astronomy Education, Saltsjöbadens Samskola, Stockholm Observatory and the Swedish National Space Board.
The problems were prepared by the Organizing Committee in these two languages and the leaders were responsible for the translation to the native languages of the participants just before the rounds (three hours before).
The place of lodging for the teams was Vandrarhem Zinkensdamm (a hostel at a central location in Stockholm, close to the Metro station Zinkensdamm).

Oscar Backlund was director of the Pulkovo observatory from 1895 until his death in 1916.
Bertil Lindblad became leader of the Stockholm Observatory after Karl Bohlin retired in 1927, and some years later, in 1931, the new Stockholm Observatory was inaugurated in Saltsjöbaden, outside the city.
The changing status of Swedish astronomy evident in the construction of the Saltsjöbaden Observatory is also evident in the fact that the 1938 General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union was held in Stockholm, indicating the respect that Swedish astronomy was accorded in the international astronomical world.

 Hjalmar Branting - Biography
He was educated at the exclusive Beskow School in Stockholm, passing his matriculation examination at the age of seventeen, with a distinguished record in mathematics and Latin.
In 1881 when he learned that the Stockholm Workers Institute, which provided lectures and courses of study for workingmen, had been denied financial support by the city, he contributed from his personal funds the amount necessary to keep the Institute open.
Elected to the Lower Chamber of the Parliament in 1896 from a workingmen's constituency in Stockholm, Branting was the sole Social Democrat to hold a seat until 1902.

 Gemini Observatory
The star was imaged by the Gemini Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) less than a year prior to the gigantic explosion, and is located in the nearby galaxy M-74 in the constellation of Pisces.
However, the fantastic resolution and depth of the Gemini and Hubble images allowed the Smartt team to estimate the temperature, luminosity, radius and mass of this progenitor star and reveal that it was a normal large, old star.
The ING operates the 4.2 metre William Herschel Telescope, the 2.5 metre Isaac Newton Telescope, and the 1.0 metre Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope.
