The Stockton and Darlington railway (SandDR), which opened in 1825, was the first railway to use steam locomotives and carry passengers.
The line was 26 miles (40 km) long, and was built between Stockton-on-Tees and Darlington and from Darlington to several collieries near Shildon in north-eastern England.
Inspired by wealthy local wool merchant Edward Pease, the SandDR was constructed in the early 1820s and was initially meant to be an ordinary horse-drawn wagonway, which were then commonplace in England.

The opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825 brought about further significant increases in the trade and population of Stockton as lead from the dales could now be quickly brought to the town along with coal from mines in the Bishop Auckland area.
The railway which brought about such a rapid increase in the development of Stockton was ultimately to bring about the downfall of this port, with the extension of the Stockton and Darlington line to Middlesbrough in 1830.
Norton, across the Lustrum or Lustring Beck to the north east of Stockton is believed to mean the northern settlement and may have fallen within one of the earliest parts of the North East to be settled by the Anglo-Saxons.

In 1821 George Stephenson, who had built several steam engines to work in the Killingworth colliery, heard of Edward Pease's intention of building an 8-mile (12.9-kilometre) line from Stockton on the coast to Darlington to exploit a rich vein of coal.
The main population centre, old Darlington town, lies on the River Skerne near its confluence with the Tees.
The section north of the Tees, including the historic town of Stockton, forms part of the geographic and historic county of Durham.

Soon afterwards the junction of the Darlington branch with the main line was reached, the first eight and a half miles having been covered in sixty-five minutes (excluding stops), at an average speed of eight miles an hour.
