The borough is first mentioned in 1283, when the king took tallage from it during the vacancy of the see.

During the Civil War Stockton castle was a Royalist stronghold and in1640 when a treaty was signed making the Tees a boundary between the forces of Scotland and the King, this castle stayed in Royalist hands.
For many centuries Stockton was the most important settlement in the north Teesside area, but in more ancient times Norton and Billingham were places of significance forming important agricultural settlements in the Anglo-Saxon age.
The opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825 brought about further significant increases in the trade and population of Stockton as lead from the dales could now be quickly brought to the town along with coal from mines in the Bishop Auckland area.

In 1930 a large bequest of paintings was made to the people of Stockton by Miss Annie Elizabeth Clephan as a memorial to her father Edwin Clephan.
He was an avid collector although it is not known where he acquired most of his pictures and when he died his collection passed to his daughter who left it upon her death to Stockton.
Edwin (1817-1911) was the third son of Robert Clephan a baker in Silver Street, Stockton but who had originally come from Scotland.

Stockton politicians are giving the money to the Wild Bird Discovery Centre at the new Saltholme Nature Reserve on the north bank of the River Tees.
Stockton Council's £450,000 grant will go towards the cost of the bird centre, run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
In coming years, with further land acquisitions to link existing protected areas around Teesmouth, the new reserve could form less than half of a 1,000ha regional nature park stretching from Hartlepool to the River Tees.

Billingham was opposed to inclusion in the Teesside Borough in '68.
As you say, Stockton was a well established town as was Yarm and, for that matter, so was Darlington and I think anyone from outside the Tees Valley, would be hard put to separate Darlington from the other towns further east as regards accent.
The Stockton dialect must have been similar to the nearby dialects spoken in the areas where Hartlepool and Middlesbrough would grow and I can't believe that the native Stockton dialect was completely wiped out.
