For the light field car (lEpkw) Stoewer of Stettin was chosen in 1936, with BMW of Eisenach and Hanomag of Hanover joining the manufacturing programme in 1937 The only subsequent difference between the vehicles from these three manufacturers was the use of their own engines, albeit of a similar cubic capacity and dimensions.
These were costly and complex vehicles, and although significant cost savings were made from having the one chassis design, the engine story was quite different.
These Einheits field cars were also given the slang name of “Kubelwagen”, as were all the previous and subsequent field car programme vehicles.

This particular Stoewer is known to have been in England for approximately 25 years prior to its purchase by the current owner in 1997.
It had arrived in England with no bodywork to the rear of the engine bulkhead, but forward of the engine bulkhead it had its original engine bonnet, radiator and radiator cowling and engine, but was running on 16” tyres, a not uncommon situation given the rarity of the suitable 18” tyres.
However the Stoewer’s overhead valve1800cc engine was not in such good condition and consequently following dismantling was handed over to a specialist company to be given new big end and crank white metal bearings, new pistons and rings and new cylinder linings.

Stoewer cars were generally of high quality and well-respected, and mostly in the middle-class range though their 8-cylinder models from the late 1920s and early 1930s rivalled those of upper-class manufacturer Horch.
The city of Stettin acquired most of the stock to ensure employment and the founding Stoewer family, responsible for most of the technical developments, was ousted in 1934.
The last new range of Stoewer private cars was developed by Karl Trefz, a competent manager though his experience was largely in the field of industrial vehicles.

In the mid thirties Stoewer like others had financial problems and there even were negotiations to produce a few hundred Eiffel coachworks for Ford.

Unfortunately, there is no known history or photographs of this car until after the occupation, when along with another Stoewer, and numerous other vehicles, it was parked up at Springfield Stadium in St. Helier, awaiting public auction on November 2nd 1945.
It was not until 1990, after many years of standing in the open in a non working condition, that it changed hands again.
Harrington gave this Stoewer, and the engine from another, to Damien Horn.
