HOSPITAL bosses have been slammed for their handling of an outbreak of a superbug which killed at least 33 people.
Stoke Mandeville Hospital failed to control an outbreak of Clostridium Difficile last year because bosses were more worried about Government targets on casualty waiting times, a new report says.
The hospital had not learnt lessons from a previous outbreak of the superbug at the hospital between October 2003 and June 2004, the Healthcare Commission said.

The village of Stoke Mandeville was very badly hit by the cholera epidemic that swept across England in the early part of the decade, and so a cholera hosital was established on the parish border between Stoke Mandeville and Aylesbury.
During the Second World War the hospital was used to treat military casualties, and was expanded during this time to cater for the extra patients, so as to support the nearby Royal Bucks Hospital, in the centre of Aylesbury.

The suffix Mandeville was first recorded in 1284 when the manor was listed as being in the hands of the powerful Norman de Mandeville family.
The former medieval parish church on the outskirts of the village was condemned in the mid 20th Century and has now been demolished altogether.

The cleaning contract at Stoke Mandeville was held jointly by two private companies, but next year the hospital plans to second members of staff under a new type of contract to another company which would allow it to retain responsibility for the staff and for standards of hygiene.
