Anson Phelps Stokes bought the rights to the railroad, planned to run between Austin and Battle Mountain, in 1879.
James Stokes proposed the dissolution of the company in a letter to the stockholders on June 24, 1958 because of a major slump in the value of the company's ores and a rise in wages and operating costs.
Stokes proposed in 1958 to donate those water rights to the state before the company lost them through lack of beneficial use upon dissolution.

The Wells-Brown house now serves as the home of the Stone Mountain Historic Society.  It is located at 1036 Ridge Avenue.  The property was generously donated to the society by the Jordon-Stokes-Brown family in honor of Josephine Brown Cervantes and Grace Brown Harris.  Construction of the house dates to 1870.

Today Stokes and nearby High Point State Park, which can be reached via a connecting trail, offer a combined total of approximately 30,000 acres, most of which is accessible to mountain bikers.
The present-day Stokes State Forest, with land holdings in excess of 15,000 acres, began as a 500-acre land donation by former Gov. Edward C. Stokes, who served from 1905 to 1908.
Camping is available at either park, which is convenient for hard-core riders looking for two continuous days of serious riding.

In Red River, however, it was an Oklahoma businessman by the name of Stokes E. Bolton and his wife Billie who decided that the town needed a winter attraction to supplement its reputation as a summer resort.
During the early days of Red River City, founded in 1895 as a gold and silver mining camp, mail was delivered in winter months by hearty and brave men who used long skis - ten to twelve feet in length - to traverse the snowy mountain terrain.
