The destruction of the cultural memory was a means to achieve ethnic homogenisation of the community and to extinct cultural diversity, which made the fabric of which the society of Bosnia and Herzegovina was woven.
In the war against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the territory of Stolac was split in two, and a systematic annihilation of the Bosniak cultural heritage was conducted.
The identification of the scope and purposes of the destructions in Stolac may provide new insight into the meaning of the cultural memory in relation to other appurtenant human rights, seen from the point of view of both an individual and of a community.

Crimes in the Municipality of Stolac 1992-94, recently published by the authorities in east Mostar and immediately denounced by their counterparts in west Mostar as 'a flagrant infringement of the Dayton Agreement', presents the chronology of the war neatly and meticulously.
In Stolac, all Muslim cultural monuments and other buildings with a recognizable Muslim identity (which formed a good part of the town) were burned down and destroyed, beginning with the four mosques of which the oldest - the Imperial Mosque - was built in 1519.
According to Crimes in the Municipality of Stolac, 1559 Bosniak men and 49 women and old people from Stolac were imprisoned in camps run by the HVO between April 1993 and April 1994.

The international High Representative in Bosnia, Carl Westendorp, sacked the mayor of the southern town of Stolac on Thursday for impeding the return of Muslim refugees, the Croatian news agency HINA reported.
Westendorp said in a letter to Raguz that he had failed to "fulfil the requirements for the unimpeded return of Bosnian Muslim refugees and to establish a special municipal commission to encourage and promote this process".
Out of 100 Muslim families due to return to Stolac under a 1996 pilot project, 82 had returned, a UNHCR spokesperson was quoted by the agency as saying on Thursday.
