The Stomiiform order does not seem to utilize bacteria as a lighting source; however, recent researches have found that a piece of bacterium-like DNA in one photophore, which suggests that these contain bacteria that must have been largely modified.

As is the usual case for abyssal sea creatures, all members of Stomiiformes but one have luminescent organs (photophores), whose structure is characteristic of the order.

This paper is the third in a series designed to outline the phylogenetic relationships in the Stomiiformes, a large group of primarily mesopelagic fishes found in all of the world's oceans.
The previous works include Weitzman's (1974) revision of the Sternoptychidae and classification of stomiiform subgroups at the "family" level and above, and Fink and Weitzman's (1982) study of Diplophos and diagnosis of the order.
Herein, I consider the relationships of the twenty-six genera of stomiiform fishes known as dragonfishes, viperfishes, snaggletooths, and loosejaws.

 Deep-Sea Fish Diversity and Ecology in the Benthic Boundary Layer III Posters - Ocean Sciences [OS]
The order Stomiiformes (Teleostei) is a widespread and abundant group of meso- and bathypelagic fishes whose interrelationships are still problematic, despite significant progress made by previous investigators using morphological data.
The present study is a new analysis of stomiiform relationships based mostly on DNA sequence data from the single-copy nuclear genes RAG1, EF1a, and MLL, addressing the placement of Stomiiformes within the fish tree of life and the monophyly and relationships of major clades within the order.
The implications of stomiiform phylogeny for broader questions in deep-sea biology, including character evolution, ecology, biogeography, and speciation, are also discussed.

Shannon’s dissertation research focuses on the order Stomiiformes, which comprises more than 400 species of deep-sea fishes, including bristlemouths, marine hatchetfishes, lightfishes, dragonfishes, snaggletooths, and loosejaws.
Shannon studies the evolutionary interrelationships of these fishes using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequence data.
