 Stoner 63/63A 5.56mm machinegun -- SEAL/MST Weapons
Dr. Eugene Stoner's idea was for a modular, gas-operated, selective firearm that could be made into a rifle, a carbine, a belt-fed machine gun (right or left feed), a squad automatic weapon with top feed (similar to the British BREN gun), and a solenoid-fired fixed machine gun for vehicle use.
An additional 850 Stoner 63A guns were made between 1966 and 1969, and approximatley 100 Mk 23 Mod 0 Stoners were made for the Navy SEALs in 1969.
Most SEAL Stoners were of the belt-fed, light machinegun (LMG) variety such as the Stoner 63A Commando (which had a shortened barrel).

O, the Stoner was very popular with the SEALs on account of the capacity of its ammunition capacity (150 rounds), belt feed system and the relatively high rate of fire of 850 rd/min.

Modern Firearms - Stoner 63 weapon system: light machine gun XM202 and Mark 23 (Mk.23 mod.0)
In general the Stoner system, while having the advantages of modularity and interchangeability of parts and thus great flexibility in tactical use, was somewhat too expensive and also slightly over-complicated for a dedicated light machine gun (or any other configuration).
On earlier Stoner 63 system weapons, the charging handle was located on the right side of the bolt carrier; the safety and fire selector were combined in one control, located on the left side of the trigger unit.
All Stoner 63 light machine guns were issued with detachable folding bipods; while tripod and even vehicle mountings were developed by Cadillac Gage Corp, it seems that these never were used in combat.

Although it was poised to become the US Army standard rifle, during evaluation the M16 proved to be more effective due to its lower complexity and maintenance requirements and was chosen instead.

The Stoner System was tested by the US Marines, and they might have chosen it with some more development if Robert McNamara, the Secretary of Defense at the time had allowed it; instead, he was already in bed with the M-16.
The Stoner has been described as a "do-it-yourselfer’s" weapon; aside from the barrel lengths and bolt combinations, the Stoner 63A could be modified to fire from an open or closed bolt, or feed from the bottom, top, or side.

Tracing its heritage back to the Stoner M63, and sharing design traits with the AK, AR, and SIG 550 the M96 represents an interesting representation of various designs, in one well conceived package.
Although its heritage can be traced back to the the original Stoner 63, the only part that is common is the buttstock.
The M96 utilizes a rotating multi-lug bolt (similar to an AR15 bolt), and a gas piston surrounded by a recoil spring, connected to the bolt to cycle the rifle (unlike the AR15, which uses direct gas pressure on the bolt carrier).

The Stoner 63 Carbine as tested was suitable for US Army use as a combat vehicle-stowed individual weapon, and the Colt CAR15-SMG would be suitable when its deficiency is corrected.

Along came Eugene Stoner in the early 1960s with the AR-15 and the Stoner 63 system which required a militarized version of the.222 Remington with the time-tested ratios (neck-to-shoulder angle to overall length) to function well in a full auto system.
Included in the mix were the expense of building M-14s and the reduced cost per unit of the 5.56 compared to the 7.62 mm.
The characteristics of the.223 Remington remained unchanged during those initial years, and the reports from Vietnam reflected what all the shooters already knew: A 55-grain FMJ at 3100-3200 feet per second was a marginal performer past 100 yards, even on small people weighing 100-120 lbs.
