Doom metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Doom metal is a form of heavy metal that emerged as a recognised subgenre in the mid-1980s.
Doom metal developed further in the early 1990s, when a number of bands started combining the slow, melancholic, doom metal style that was pioneered in the 1980s with influences from death metal and other forms of extreme metal, including growled vocals.
Combining the thick, riffing sound of stoner doom with the raw abrasiveness and shrieked vocals of hardcore, sludge is at the outer limits of doom metal and is an acquired taste (although a couple of bands, such as Eyehategod and Crowbar, are fairly well known within the metal community).

Stoner metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stoner music, stoner metal and stoner rock are interchangeable terms describing a sub-genre of rock music.
Stoner music often fuses slow-to-mid tempo, bassy guitar riffs, psychedelic jams, melodic, often slightly raspy vocals and stripped down 'raw' production to figuratively melt "a hundredweight of hot desert sand into metal".
The notoriously influencing metal idols of Black Sabbath — especially due to their song "Sweet Leaf" — were a significant force in the evolution of stoner music while various artists such as The Grateful Dead have also played a part in the evolution of the genre.

Whereas a painting is experienced visually, while a symphony is an audible experience, a heavy metal band's "image" and the common theme that binds all their music is expressed in the artwork on the album, the set of the stage, the tone of the lyrics, and the sound of the music.
Ultimately, "pure" heavy metal would position itself at the periphery of pop culture, never quite at center, and metal denizens contend that the move towards the center was a commercialism that compromised both the artistic integrity of the form and the opportunity for messages to be taken seriously.
Pure heavy metal is mainly blues-based, with pentatonic scales and a blues-like song structure; fl metal (and other, more highly-evolved genres) is based on classical music, even if at a first glance it seems to be only distorted guitars playing a very fast repeating melody.

Though plenty of heavy metal bands have been regarded through the years as especially compatible with the effects of marijuana, stoner metal was a distinctly '90s phenomenon.
Stoner metal bands updated the long, mind-bending jams and ultra-heavy riffs of bands like Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Blue Oyster Cult, and Hawkwind by filtering their psychedelia-tinged metal and acid rock through the buzzing sound of early Sub Pop-style grunge.
Stoner metal could be campy and self-aware, messily evocative, or unabashedly retro; in any case, bands like Monster Magnet and Kyuss were perfect fits for the eclectic tastes of the early-'90s alternative metal movement.

Metal is probably the genre most frequently plagued by misconceptions (even within the metal community itself!).
Despite the fact that a lot of metal fans spend more money on CD's than fans of other genres and that there is a strong underground movement of metal bands and labels with great talent, the media continues to largely ignore metal.
However as soon as it becomes known the departed happened to enjoy Doom-Metal or metal in general (lets be honest, most people wouldn't know the difference if their life depended on it) the finger is immediately pointed at the music.

Milling is generally done on a milling machine, which is a power-driven machine used for the complex shaping of metal (or possibly other materials) parts, by removing unneeded material to form the final shape.
In a metalworking lathe, metal is removed from the workpiece using a hardened cutting tool which is usually fixed to a solid moveable mounting called the "toolpost", this arrangement is then moved around the workpiece using handwheels and/or computer controlled motors.
This is often done by melting the workpieces and adding a filler material to form a pool of molten material that cools to become a strong joint, but sometimes pressure is used in conjunction with heat, or by itself, to produce the weld.

Gonga: self-titled - PopMatters Music Review
In what may be the album's blessing and curse, Gonga is a definitive stoner metal album, one that does not really expand the boundaries of the possibly defunct genre but instead acts as a primer of such, condensing all of the great qualities of the genre into one convenient album.
Previous attempts to define "stoner metal" have focused on the genre's supposed obsession with the past, particularly the late '70s.
Even for a stoner metal band, Gonga's fascination with slowing down the pace to a throbbing crawl seems downright experimental at times, particularly in the equally enthralling and aggravating "Octane Bud".

Stoner rockers exchanged the morbid depression of doom metal for effects-heavy '60s-inspired guitar jams and a feeling of opiated drowsiness that was more about long strange trips than shadows and gloom.

High On Fire is an interesting metal band that bashes out sludgy riffs and then mixes them with metal lyrics and attitude.
The three extreme musicians collectively known as High On Fire pound out some truly imposing material on this record, and also guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike (formerly of stoner metal band Sleep) proves he is willing to take his art to new levels as he spews out epic medieval lyrics over the walls of colossal riffs.
