Stoner metal bands updated the long, mind-bending jams and ultra-heavy riffs of bands like Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Blue Oyster Cult, and Hawkwind by filtering their psychedelia-tinged metal and acid rock through the buzzing sound of early Sub Pop-style grunge.
Stoner metal could be campy and self-aware, messily evocative, or unabashedly retro; in any case, bands like Monster Magnet and Kyuss were perfect fits for the eclectic tastes of the early-'90s alternative metal movement.
Although they are widely acknowledged as pioneers of the booming stoner rock scene of the 1990s, the band enjoyed little commercial success during their brief existence, but their combination of sludgy,...

stoner rock - Music & Musician Forums   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
Stoner rock is an actual genre of music, rather than just bands that are good to get stoned listening to, and neither Radiohead or Floyd are stoner rock.
Stoner rock as a genre is defined by the sound of the music, rather than whether it's good to get stoned to or not.
Stoner Rock is basically 70's Classic Rock like Blue Öyster Cult and Black Sabbath mixed through a rough filter of late 80's/early 90's Sub Pop grunge, like somebody else said, basically Kyuss.

Stoner rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stoner rock and stoner metal are interchangeable terms describing sub-genres of rock and metal music.
Stoner rock often fuses slow-to-mid tempo, bassy guitar riffs, psychedelic jams, melodic, often slightly raspy vocals and stripped down 'raw' production.
The progenitors of stoner rock, just like stoner rockers today, often share the characteristic that they and their audiences are stoners (i.e.

Rock music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rock is a form of popular music from the mid 20th century which typically features a vocal melody (often with vocal harmony) that is supported by accompaniment of electric guitars, a bass guitar, and drums, often with a strong back beat.
The culmination of rock and roll as a socially-unifying force was seen in the rock festivals of the late '60s, the most famous of which was Woodstock which began as a three-day arts and music festival and turned into a "happening", as hundreds of thousands of youthful fans converged on the site.
If punk rock was a social and musical phenomenon, it garnered little in the way of record sales (small specialty labels such as Stiff Records had released much of the punk music to date) or American radio airplay, as the radio scene continued to be dominated by mainstream formats such as disco and album-oriented rock.

But "stoner rock" is a brand-new hazy genre for the guitar-heavy, though the hybridized offshoot stems from the influence of "seed" groups Black Sabbath and AC/DC.
Just like the mutated pot leaf used as a totem on the cover, "stoner rock" is an example of forced evolution.
"Stoner rock" as a genre suddenly popped up and to pretend this is a separate genre is silly.

Stoner Kings music can best be described as a very unique blend that meshes elements of bands such as Spiritual Beggars, Trouble, Entombed and Thin Lizzy together with 70's influences here and there to form a brutally heavy juggernaut.

Rough Edge: Stoner Kings CD Review
The first thing you'll notice about Stoner Kings is that their guitars are fuzzy and loud - just like good stoner rock should be.
Their sound may be a little more lively than some other stoner bands - each of the ten songs herein rock at a pretty good pace - but the stoner sound is where the band is based.
Fans of stoner rock will immediately like Stoner Kings; others - who may find the stoner sound too psychedelic and/or repetitive - may find this to their liking as well.

Dozer attacks with the classic blend of deep, heavy rock instrumentals, shot through with psychedelic fuzz, and tenor sung vocals, all fusing in an energetic and smokeworthy crank-out of hard rock attack.
Take a little trippyness, a lot muscular rock, some melody mixed in the crunch, and full tilt attitude and you've got the stoner rock assault that is Dozer's "Through the Eyes of Heathens." Never say die 'tude and rollicking rock manliness are the order of the day.
Although the record still adheres to the tried stoner rock mix of low vocals behind the music, the singing is no longer a secondary ornament, Nordin sings with a gut full of power, and the lyrics are thankfully not exclusively about drugs, cars, and girls.
