Stone's book highlights war history   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The book, Stone said, refutes the notion that “when rights are lost, they are never regained,” showing how after rights are quelled during wartime they are reestablished even more firmly after the period of stress is over.
While the book focuses on the responses of presidents, citizens, and Congress to civil liberties, it is mostly concerned with the role of the court in supporting or suppressing free speech and civil liberties during wartime.
Stone is on a leave of absence from the University of Chicago, and is currently teaching at the New York University School of Law for autumn quarter.

The Stone Book, part of The Stone Book Quartet, a series of children's books by Alan Garner, follows Mary and her father in a time when stone cutting was the main trade.
One day she requests a book from her father and he shows her the true meaning of books - he builds her one out of stone.

Books of the poet: Ruth Stone - book works writings work
Indeed, here is Ruth Stone looking upward and transforming some wind-whipped trash and a squadron of crows into "...the gaity of flying paper/and the fl high flung patterns of flocking birds." Hers is a vital creative vision that makes magic within the imagery of a poem and an alchemy takes place.
Fluffy love poetry is not high on Stone's agenda, this is razor sharp and yet misleadingly simple, almost conversational, compilation of heavy themes wrapped in very light poems.
The "sadness of things/speaks for you." (from "Interim") The flower beds and lawns of a small college--one where Stone likely taught at one time--intone the "quiet authority of culture." (from "Border") The title is somewhat ironic, for Stone illumines her subjects in an almost preternatural way.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1) - J. K. Rowling book review summary
Part of the attraction of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone comes from the familiar but at the same time exotic setting of an English public school, complete with houses and schoolboy adventures (in which Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione struggle to save the world and win the house cup).
To highlight the limitations of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, it is instructive to compare it with another children's fantasy novel in which a neophyte wizard attends a school for wizards - Ursula Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea.
So Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone will be a great Christmas present for kids who haven't read it yet - and it is a book that adults (at least those without stunted imaginations) can read as well.
