Stonewall Book Award: Barbara Gittings Literature Award for fiction and the Stonewall Book Award: Israel Fishman Non-Fiction Award are presented to English language works published the year prior to the announcement date.
The award, which consists of a commemorative plaque and a cash stipend, is announced in March and presented to the winning authors or editors at the American Library Association Annual Conference in June.
A short statement describing why a book is being nominated must accompany the nomination, which must be submitted to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Book Award Committee Chair by October 31 of each year.

The annual award is given by the American Library Association through their Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered (GLBT) Roundtable and is the oldest book award given for "outstanding works about GLBT issues or by GLBT authors." Two awards are given each year, one in Fiction/Literature and one in Nonfiction.
Winners are notified in January and the awards are presented at the ALA's annual conference in June.
The 2004 winner of the Stonewall Book Award for Nonfiction (also known as the Israel Fishman Non-Fiction Award) was "Lost Prophet: The Life and Times of Bayard Rustin" by John D'Emilio, (Free Press).

Monique Truong, author of "The Book of Salt" (Houghton Mifflin Company) is the winner of the Barbara Gittings Book Award in Literature, and historian John D'Emilio, author of "Lost Prophet: The Life and Times of Bayard Rustin" (Free Press), is the winner of the Israel Fishman Book Award for Nonfiction.
The Stonewall Award, formerly called the ALA Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered (GLBT) Book Award, was established in 1971.
It is the oldest literary award given for literature exploring the GLBT experience.
