The Town of Stony Point was founded in 1865 from the northern part of the Town of Haverstraw and was the last town created in the county.
The western town line is the border of Orange County, New York, and the eastern town line is defined by the Hudson River with Westchester County, New York on the opposite shore.

In an analogous context, we have concluded that the positions of administrative assistant to the town supervisor and member of the town zoning board of appeals are compatible, as long as the zoning board of appeals does not review decisions of the town board.

He requested that 1282 Stony Point Road be rezoned from R-1E, which is residential single-family, to R-3, which is multi-family residential.
He said there is “an ongoing pattern of defiant behavior” with regard to the building’s use and “a reluctance of town officials to monitor it.” He said 75 percent of the closest neighbors oppose the rezoning.
Town Board members entered all comments into the record, referred the adjoining residents’ petition to the town assessor and voted to refer the rezoning request back to the board for further study.

The New York Historic House Trust held a ceremony to relight the lighthouse on September 19, 2002.
Formerly mounted at the end of the breakwater, the lighthouse was relocated to the grounds of the town hall in 1951.

After the new tower was completed on June 30, 1871, the old tower from 1825 was demolished.
The new lighthouse was very similar to the lighthouse at Stony Point, also on the Great Lakes.
In 1984 the lighthouse was given to the Town of Sodus and during the next year the bank in front of the lighthouse was rebuilt to retard erosion of the land around the lighthouse.

This new lighthouse is constructed almost identical to the Stony Point lighthouse also on Lake Ontario.
The 1825 lighthouse tower was then dismantled and it's stones were then used to construct a jetty for protection of the shoreline in front of the lighthouse.
In 1984, the Town of Sodus obtained ownership of the property and the shoreline was reconstructed to help slow erosion of the land around the lighthouse.

Stony Point didn't separate from Haverstraw until 1865.
While there are villages called "Haverstraw" and "Stony Point" which appear on maps, Clarkstown, for example, will not appear as a dot on a map.
If you have the name of a village your ancestor lived in, it will be helpful to know the town that village is part of when searching records.
