There's just no explaining the sense of wonder that creeps into nearly every minute of "Stop Making Sense." Whether you've seen three rock shows over the course of a lifetime or 3,000, you can almost fool yourself into thinking that this might be your first.
From that point on, "Stop Making Sense" is so straightforward, so Spartan in its conception, that you'd hardly expect it to swing, and yet it does.
In "Stop Making Sense," he acclimates us, slowly, to the deep strangeness of David Byrne, without turning him cuddly (the unblinking intensity of his "Psycho Killer" still makes me a little queasy) or making him seem easily explainable.

This being the 15th anniversary of the release of the Talking Heads concert film, Stop Making Sense is reason enough to re-release the old chestnut, with an upgraded sound mix and video remastering to CD, DVD and other such modern initaled tech like that.
When you're young, it only takes a song or two to make you go back to an album looking for more gems, and tracks like "Psycho Killer" and "I, Zimbra" (or "Don't Worry About The Government" and "Life During Wartime") were better than good starting points.
Stop Making Sense captures the Talking Heads at the peak of their powers.

The smoothness of the unit onstage takes on an added poignance now, after the rancor and break-up, so that the film now seems not so much a snapshot of the Heads during their Speaking in Tongues tour as a record of what turned out to be their peak.
The film is a summing-up of sorts (a successful blend of old and new), as if some part of Byrne knew it was the beginning of the end.
Byrne's stage concepts are still cool after all these years; it's always fun to watch the band literally take shape onstage, while roadies push parts of the set into place (Byrne and Demme graciously give the stage crew a shout-out during "Take Me to the River").

No, I think Nabokov is closer to the core of the absurd when he stops with the merely irrational.
And yet the absurd isn't simply irrational - it's a particular kind of irrationality, or rather, I would argue, the representation of a particular kind of irrationality: the incomplete absorption and ineffective deployment of orthodox systems of ordering; a "crazy logic" that is itself internally discontinuous.
It makes no apology for itself, it simply is. All children are Gregor Samsa, awakening to discover they have metamorphosed into giant cockroaches during the night, and then simply having to get on with it.

If that isn't a strong recommendation, I don't know what is. Stop Making Sense provides a very entertaining and well-structured look at a Talking Heads concert, and the film has rightfully earned its status as a classic of the genre.

Prominent in the expanse between music and film is Stop Making Sense, helmed by both director Jonathan Demme and the Talking Heads.
Foremost a concert, Stop Making Sense was shot during four subsequent shows during the band’s 1983 tour, though the resulting footage was edited to resemble a single appearance.
Though the Talking Heads are no strangers to this convention, Stop Making Sense is a rare gesture; it excises potentially distracting philosophy and celebrates, instead, the essence of music.
