  FAQ
Stop Motion Animation uses the same principles as drawn or cel animation (cartoons).......a movie camera is used like a still camera.....there are 24 different drawings (which equals one second of movement) and the movie camera shoots one frame (which is one picture) of film for each drawing (in proper sequence).
Stop motion is used in all sorts of ways from creatures/aliens or fantasy puppet characters.....to cartoonish or stylized puppets.
Stop Moiton has always had a checkered existence and as I stated above in the FAQ here, stop motion was never fully embraced by the mainstream entertainment business.

Motion blur occurs for much the same reason when you take a still photo of something moving, that moving object will end up blurred.
But in stop motion cinematography, the object being animated is technically not moving when each frame of film is exposed.
The results are astonishing: producing motion blur, alleviating the "jerky" motion long attributed to stop-motion animation, and creating fantastically believable creatures come to life.

Image-Based Motion Blur for Stop Motion Animation - Brostow & Essa
Stop motion animation is a well-established technique where still pictures of static scenes are taken and then played at film speeds to show motion.
A major limitation of this method appears when fast motions are desired; most motion appears to have sharp edges and there is no visible motion blur.
Appearance of motion blur is a strong perceptual cue, which is automatically present in live-action films, and synthetically generated in animated sequences.

Motion pictures are usually projected at 24 frames a second and video at 30 frames a second (although this comes in the form of two interlaced half frames every 60th of a second).
Motion picture cameras record by exposing frames (24 a second) one after another so that movement, like a person walking down a street, is captured.
Because the action was not stopped a proper blur was recorded, but since the monster puppet was being photographed in real-time, it was limited in the actions it could perform.

Generally, stop motion animation is confined to three dimensional objects, but is also used in paper cut-out animation.
Usually, if a sequence is one-of-a-kind, in that the movements are not registered to any fixed reference point, or can't be duplicated exactly - it's stop motion.
Computer motion controlled photography is also stop-motion but the sequence can be exactly repeated any number of times to layer passes for adding lighting and other special effects.

When the motion is faster I suspect that rather than having identical double frames the use different ones per frame.
This includes the non smooth motion as well as those subtle changes that sometimes happen in the surface of clay models from frame to frame (like if the animatior left some fingerprints on the model when posing it).
it seems to me that stop motion animators don't shoot at constant rate, taking more pictures when a secuence has faster motion.
