Topic: Stopbank

  28 (Maori) Battalion Association
The enemy held the near stopbank in part of that battalion's area and an intermittent battle appeared to be raging to force him off it, a battle that eventually ended in the Germans vacating the premises in favour of 21 Battalion.
This was the old stopbank of the Santerno which in that locality wound through the flat country in a series of loops.
At the real stopbank the same procedure was adopted; the water was twelve feet wide, was muddy and looked deep; the leaders plunged in and waded forwardsome had to swim, for wet or dry it was imperative to keep up with the barrage.

Seven Germans had left their outpost on the stopbank to sur- render to the Northamptonshire battalion on 1 April, and four men of A Company, 25 Battalion, had dug a tunnel through the bank and occupied the deserted post.
A and B Companies of 24 Battalion, on the left flank, attacked the stopbank in the evening of the 3rd and dislodged the enemy from several posts, with the result that by dawn 6 Brigade was on the bank along the whole of its sector.
As the Poles had not reached the stopbank on the left of the New Zealand Division, 24 Battalion was exposed to enfilading fire and attack from that direction.

Local residents alerted Horizons Emergency Management staff tonight of a stopbank that is struggling to hold on the lower reaches of the Manawatu River.
It is likely that the stopbank will eventually give way, and when it does the floodwater from the Manawatu River will spill over mostly farmland and it is intended that the temporary stopbank provide another layer of protection to the township and allow authorities time for sandbagging and evacuations if necessary.
On the left is the main stopbank that is under threat from erosion.

Stopbanks constructed to keep out floodwaters often have a design standard that can be beaten during above design or unusual storm events.
A stopbank with good even grass cover will survive overtopping for considerable periods without damage but bare patches on the back slope are the first to scour out.
When stopbanks, particularly those constructed prior to proper compaction techniques, come under load during a flood, boils or spongy spots can develop on the bank slopes.

A sum of $320,000 is budgeted to raise the stopbank by up to half a metre at the Foxton loop at the upstream end of the Foxton Beach residential area.
The existing stopbank is what saved Foxton Beach from being flooded in February 2004, as the swollen Manawatu River, after breaching stopbanks further upstream, raced around the Foxton Beach houses and out to sea.
The raising of the stopbank is part of the programmed upgrade of the Lower Manawatu Scheme, the largest of 31 river and drainage schemes managed by Horizons.

Dr O’Halloran says, when the stopbank was topped up after the Edgecumbe earthquake in 1987, the designers “appear to have been unaware of the existence and significance” of the thin areas in the upper soil layers.
A geotechnical investigation of the stopbanks upstream of the Transpower/Horizons substation, including the area where the breach occurred, was on the schedule for this year as part of a routine check.
However, because the stopbank was topped up afterwards to make up for land subsidence, it may have had an indirect influence, she says.

After floods in 1990, the strength of the stopbank was assessed, and horizons.mw found some sections would not stand-up to a major flood.
Over time, the stopbank had weakened for various reasons, such as damage from the root systems of large trees, rotting tree stumps, and unsuitable fill material used in the original stopbank over 50 years ago.
The stopbank upgrade is designed and supervised by horizons.mw and is jointly funded by horizons.mw and the Ruapehu District Council.

Whangamarino Weir - Appraisal of Risk of Piping
Fraser Thomas were subsequently engaged by the Department of Conservation to appraise the risk of piping and uplift occurring adjacent to the stopbank, running along the Whangamarino River, as a result of the construction of the weir and the creation of the scour hole.
The stopbank is inferred to be underlain by a surficial layer of low permeability silts and clays, which are in turn underlain by pumiceous sands.
It was thought that the construction of the weir and development of the scour hole may have created a hydraulic connection between the pumiceous sands and the Whangamarino River, thus increasing the risk of piping occurring and failure of the stopbank.

The likelihood of houses being flooded in the near future is extremely remote, given the location of the potential stopbank breach.
The river level would be higher further upstream, and if water escaped through a breached stopbank it could therefore pond to a greater depth in the flooded area.
At-risk lengths of stopbank further upstream have been identified, some upgrading work was completed last construction season, and the remainder will continue as soon as weather and ground conditions permit.
