Progress Bulletin: Montego Bay Coastal Hazard Assessment
This approach was first applied to Montego Bay, Jamaica, where wave and surge effects on Montego Bay from all storms in the National Hurricane Center's database (951 storms) were modeled using the TAOS storm hazard model to develop a comprehensive information base for this statistical study.
A workshop on the Montego Bay storm hazard assessment, co-sponsored by the Jamaica Institute of Engineers (JIE) and CDMP, was held in Kingston, Jamaica, in October 1997.
The statistical approach to estimating storm surge return periods, which was developed for the Montego Bay study, was subsequently applied to the State of Florida for the estimation of storm surge return periods.

Storm Surge Mapping for Montego Bay, Jamaica
One of the devastating impacts of the passage of a hurricane on a coastline is due to the occurrence of storm surge.
Storm surge is itself caused by a number of interactions between the hurricane, the water body over which it passes, and the nearby land masses.
For the 1997 Montego Bay storm hazard mapping assessment, the 10-, 25-, 50- and 100- year surge heights at Doctor’s Cave beach were estimated for the maximum likelihood estimate and the 90 percent, 95 percent and 99 percent confidence levels.

Stormwater | Mission Bay Bacterial Source Identification Study
Because each of the sites assessed in Mission Bay had different characteristics related to bacterial sources, the dominant suspected source (e.g., storm drain effluent) or sources at each site were assessed using MST along with the receiving waters.
A high degree of similarity between the genetic fingerprints of bacteria in the receiving water and those in storm drain effluent, for instance, suggests the storm drain is a source of bacteria.
When fresh water is present in the storm drain, as is often the case due to groundwater intrusion, bacterial densities can increase by several orders of magnitude within a few days of the initial deposition.

Burlington Bay - Storm Water Data
Storm Event Monitoring by Autosampler: Because of the construction of the new science center and lake aquarium next door (ECHO at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain) and damage to the autosampler line during this period, the sampler was inactive during much of the summer.
Phosphorus concentrations were at least 100 times higher than the average concentrations in Lake Champlain throughout the storm, and during a period of heavy rain, reached to almost 1000 micrograms per L. This type of temporal data would be difficult to obtain when samples are collected by hand.
This intern conferred with Burlington Bay personnel to identify appropriate storms.

Tampa Bay could be hit by 25-foot storm surge in Category 4 hurricane
A Category 4 hurricane could cause a storm surge of as much as 25 feet in Tampa Bay, according to a University of Central Florida researcher who is looking at the risks Florida cities face from tidal surges and flooding.
They ran their storm surge model with wind and pressure fields for hypothetical hurricanes with three different paths and traveling at two different speeds, 5 and 15 mph.
While the maximum storm surge levels for a storm moving at 5 mph were a few feet lower, the surge levels remained high for much longer and therefore posed more serious risks.

The scattered thunderstorms were caused by a low-pressure system in the Panhandle that shot a mass of cool air toward Tampa Bay, said forecasters with the National Weather Service in Ruskin.
