Storm chasing is broadly defined as the intentional pursuit of a thunderstorm, regardless of motive.
Storm chasers are not paid to chase, with the exception of television media crews in certain television markets, video stringers and photographers, and a handful of graduate meteorologists and professors.
There are inherent dangers involved in storm chasing, among these are: lightning; tornadoes; large hail; flooding; hazardous road conditions from such things as rain and hail slicked roadways, animals on the roadway, and visibility reducing heavy rain (often wind blown) and hail fog; as well as driving in general.

Storm chasers are people who try to get close to storms for the purposes of observation or science.
A couple of chasers have been chasing storms since the 1940s and 1950s, an amazing feat when you consider how little information was available for them to figure out where the storms were.

(Those interested in chasing need to be concerned about safety.) Students especially need to curb their lust for the big tubes in order to fulfill their obligations as students.
There can be abuses by storm chasers, but clearly the highways belong to everyone and there is no way to keep the "yahoos" from chasing.

Flashing light bars added to your chase vehicle (similar to those used by law enforcement) may be illegal in some places and their use to imply some sort of official status to your chasing is probably going to get you in trouble someday.
If you don't understand storm structure and how it relates to severe weather, stick to chasing with someone who does know for awhile, until you learn enough to be competent.
Chasing tornadic storms at night is right on the edge of irresponsible behavior, even for an experienced chaser.
