Storm petrels, or "Mother Carey's Chickens", as they have long been called by sailors, are the smallest of the Procellariiformes.
Both the white-vented storm petrel and the wedge-rumped storm petrel are endemic Galapagos subspecies.
Storm petrels are not often easy to identify because of their very small size (6-8 inches), rapid movements, and generally great distances from the observer.

Storm Petrels build their nests and mate on far off isles or barren mountainous country in South America where predators don't bother them.
Two of the main predators for Storm Petrels are sea gulls or other large seabirds so most of the birds fly onto the shoreline to breed after dark.

We observed fl and white storm petrels on 31 seabird-watching trips to the outer Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand, November 2003 - November 2005.
Other birds seen at this location were white-faced storm petrel; fairy prion; Cook's petrel; Buller's, fluttering and flesh-footed shearwaters; common diving petrel; and blue penguin (all summer breeders in the Hauraki Gulf), also grey-faced petrel and little shearwater (both winter/spring breeders in the Hauraki Gulf).
Diving Petrels, Fluttering and Little Shearwaters and Blue Penguins (essentially resident through the year in the HG) were all coming in to burrows on the Mokes at night and the former two are very noticeable in the Outer Gulf at the moment.

 Leach's Storm-petrel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Leach's Storm-petrel or Leach's Petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa) is a small seabird of the tubenose family.
The Leach's Petrel is a small bird at 18-21 cm in length with a 43-48 cm wingspan, but is distinctly larger than the European Storm-petrel, which it superficially resembles with its dark plumage and white rump.
Lifespan for this bird is unusually long for a bird of such rather small size, with an average of 20 years and a maximum recorded lifespan of 36 years.

It would be a difficult job - storm petrel burrows are often widely dispersed among other seabirds, and large areas of the Mokes are covered in dense stands of flax, which are a pig to move around in.

PRBO Conservation Science: Saddle Rock Leach's Storm-Petrel
We are working to assess current storm-petrel population status and predation threats on Saddle Rock to provide quantitative information on which to base conservation and management plans.
To assess breeding population size and trends of Leach’s Storm-Petrels through (i) designing and installing a raised, removable boardwalk system to facilitate researcher access to a portion of Saddle Rock without damaging vegetation or crushing petrel burrows, (ii) conducting storm-petrel mark/recapture surveys and burrow/occupancy counts, and (iii) assessing predation effects on storm-petrel adults/chicks.
We will model Leach’s Storm-Petrel population trends in relation to historical data and oceanographic conditions to better understand factors affecting population dynamics at Saddle Rock and in the CCS.
