 Re: Debian or Stormix
Basically i started with Stormix before Debian because i assumed the Stormix install would be easier.
And i apt-get the stormpkg from Stormix for the graphical front end to apt and dselect, although i use the cmd line just as much.
In Stormix the Helix Gnome is included but you can just apt-get it after the base install of Debian.

Well, it seems the word is out now that Stormix has filed under for bankruptcy protection in Vancouver under Canadian law.
Anything affecting the mailing lists in early January has nothing to do with any of this, it was actually a server shuffle/upgrade of things, and the resulting DNS changes taking time to propagate.

Stormix were (basicly) doing what Progeny is now doing, I think they should join them.
Stormix users will have to do the necessary conversion, but they will be able to get support from other Linux support companies out there, and the code behind Stormix ' OS is still alive and kicking.

I just installed Stormix Linux before work this morning, took around 20-30 minutes.
Burnt a CD, booted into Stormix Linux setup, just to see if the CD was ok. Finished prepping and installation this morning.
stormix is cool, but it bothers me that it is a commercial package, and the reason I went for Debian is because its totally non-commercial.

Somewhere between the FreeBSD and the Caldera installs, LiLo got hosed and died on LI, even after I'd reinstalled Stormix.

 [newbie] Stormix LILO, DPKG software on Mandrake?
I liked what I read on the included Mandrake CD (the Install Guide and Manual are in HTML, and thus accessible) and went out and bought the Mandrake7Deluxe package [sick and tired of Win98 BSOD and other problems].
It also had a Stormix distribution CD, and the LILO screenshot in the magazine looked more workable for me than other LILO screenshots I've seen.
Would the Stormix LILO be on the CD in another form, since we're dealing with an incomplete system at the point during the install that LILO is configured?

I continued by pressing enter, "touching enter" that is. It went through a standard Linux startup with the exception of a Storm Linux graphical wrapper around the startup messages.
The end user license agreement tells us that Storm Linux is released under the GNU General Public License and identifies the Stormix trademarks.
There were two GUI programs from Stormix SAT (System Admin Tool) and the Storm Package Manager.

The goal seemed simple enough: install a firewall between my router and my LAN while preserving the ability to access my Web and mail servers, which would sit on the LAN protected by the firewall.
I grabbed the copy of Stormix Firewall that had been gathering dust, while uninvited guests began housekeeping on my server (see Resources for a link).
All the example scenarios in the User Guide were based on using IP masquerading, meaning the machines on the LAN would be invisible to the outside world.

As has been pointed out, no other dist would be interested in providing this kind of update service...
