Musgrave entered the United States Marine Corps in 1953, served as an aviation electrician and instrument technician, and as an aircraft crew chief while completing duty assignments in Korea, Japan and Hawaii, and aboard the carrier USS Wasp in the Far East.
Musgrave was employed as a mathematician and operations analyst by the Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, New York, during 1958.
Story Musgrave was selected as a scientist-astronaut by NASA in August 1967.

Story Musgrave is one of NASA's most educated astronauts, with bachelor's degrees in chemistry and in mathematics and statistics; master's degrees in business administration, in operations analysis and computer programming, in physiology and biophysics and in arts and literature and a doctorate in medicine.
Musgrave was born in 1935 in Boston and was educated at several schools between 1954 and 1987, including Syracuse University, UCLA, Marietta College, Columbia University, and the Universities of Kentucky and Houston.
Musgrave served a surgical internship at the University of Kentucky Medical Center from 1964 to 1965 and continued there as an Air Force post-doctoral fellow (1965-66), working in aerospace medicine and physiology, and as a National Heart Institute post-doctoral fellow (1966-67).

Story Musgrave, a 1960 graduate of Marietta College, was one of four Space Shuttle astronauts inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame June 21 at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
Musgrave is remembered for taking the first shuttle space walk, conducting medical and scientific experiments, operating secret devices for the military, deploying and retrieving satellites and helping repair the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope.

Musgrave was born Aug. 19, 1935, and raised on a farm in Massachusetts.

Astronaut Story Musgrave developed a mild case of frostbite on the fingers of his right hand during an equipment test in the Thermal Vacuum Chamber B at Johnson Space Center on Friday, May 28.
Musgrave was in a pressure suit testing equipment and tools in the vacuum chamber in preparation for the December Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission.
Story may be limited in his suited activities, but he is already way ahead of other crew members as far as training is concerned because of his long involvement with the Hubble servicing mission," crew commander Dick Covey said.

Ioleene Virgene Musgrave, daughter of the late John Frame and Sarah Oliver Frame, was born Sept. 16, 1920, at Ridgemont, Ill., and died in the Missouri Delta Medical Center at Sikeston on Saturday, June 26, 2004, at the age of 83.
Musgrave was a member of the Southwest Church of the Nazarene in Dexter, a homemaker and a resident of Dexter.
She was united in marriage to Ernest Andrew Musgrave on Sept. 24, 1937, at Poplar Bluff.

"Story: The Way of Water" is a two-inch thick book that begins with the astronaut, whose most famous mission was the first shuttle flight to repair the Hubble Space Telescope, taking the author on a visit to his boyhood home.
Musgrave recounts his meeting with Columbia investigators, a turning point in the probe during which he laid out how mission control might have sent the crew on a spacewalk that would have found the damage to the orbiter's left wing.
It was important for Musgrave to step forward and tell investigators that, contrary to what NASA was saying, a spacewalk was possible, based on his experience as one of the most prolific spacewalkers in history.
