The difference between read aloud and storytelling (or story re-telling, as is the case here, since we are working from children's trade literature and less from original work or family history) is that the act of storytelling is always active and inventive.
Now, for novice storytellers, I do not encourage the use of props during the telling as they can be clumsy and distracting, but used in the introduction they can create "anticipatory sets," which translated from educationalese means it will get the audience geared up for what is to follow.
Some storytellers have performances available on videotape, available at libraries, direct from storytellers, and a few videos are widely distributed and may be ordered through book chains and video stores.
