The first Panther into Stoumont, #223 of Rottenfuhrer Prahn, is knocked out and Panther #221 of Hauptscharfuhrer Heinz Knappich is damaged but still usable.
Now, the Panthers head out of Stoumont on their way to the Railroad Station, which is near a small village called Targnon.
The battles around Stoumont were to be the end for this relatively unknown soldier.

Captain Carney was relieved as liaison officer at Division Artillery, 82nd Division and reported to Division Artillery, 30th Infantry Division as liaison officer.
CCB continued the attack on La Gleize from the north and east and on Stoumont from the north and west.

Kampfgruppe Peiper CG1 focuses on the small Belgian town of Stoumont during the Battle of the Bulge.
The map is dominated by the town of Stoumont and the attached village of Roua, the large forested hill in the north-central region, shallow streams cutting their way through ravines in the northwest, and the most important building on the map, the Sanitarium.
The intent of this write up is to serve as a guide for the American preparing to defend Stoumont against the attack of Kampfgruppe Peiper and hopefully to provide insights that can lead to eventual American victory.

The plan of attack was to send the 3 Para platoons at Stoumont, entering from the south edge.
It did have the effect of sealing off these positions from helping the defenders of Stoumont, but German progress was slow due the depth of the US defenses and the concentration of guns.
Tanks and infantry moving through Stoumont from the southern pincher were needed to help reduce the US positions in the area.

While spending the night there the US 119th Infantry (30th division) deployed in Stoumont.
Note that even though the building is depicted in ASL to have only a ground- and 1st floor there is actually a 2nd floor and even a 3rd floor above the main entrance.

In Stoumont the 57L that popped up faces 2 Panthers from the front, misses the DI shot and is killed in CC.
Stoumont looks like a civil war battleground with a solid line of green facing a solid line of blue.
I've been interested in trying this CG for awhile after reading Phil Swanson's excellent article "An American at Stoumont." As my first attempt at an ftf CG I knew I would be in for a challenge against Steve, who is a very good player.

The terrain has been painstakingly researched to ensure a maximum of historical accuracy, with the area's buildings, roads, streams, etc., shown as they were in the latter half of December 1944.

Peiper placed the defense of this area under the control of von Westernhagen while he attacked Stoumont with the rest of the kampfgruppe’s armor.
He was forced to defend this area and rely on the rest of the division breaking through Stavelot and Trois Ponts to reinforce him.

Jordan's column on 20 December met no opposition until they were just north of STOUMONT, where enemy tanks and anti-tank guns stopped their advance.
He was stopped by tanks and anti-tank tire on his main route and on all the routes that he attempted to use to bypass the opposition, but he continued to press his attack.
From here a battalion of the 119th Infantry Regiment launched a coordinated attack on the town with Jordan's tanks and assault gun platoon supporting the three infantry companies while the fourth infantry company moved in an envelopment to the north.

The position is overrun and only a single NCO escapes the village, nearly three platoons of infantry are lost along with two guns and the single Sherman.
Much as in Stoumont, the Americans held their fire until the last moment and a single gun plus two more platoons of infantry, supported by mortar fire, put up a stiff resistance before being overwhelmed.
Both platoons were lost due the weight of the German attack from their front, combined with the collapsed flank in Stoumont.

At the start of the battle of the Ardennes this building was the home of 291st Engineer Combat Battalion (Company C), later it was captured by Kampfguppe Peiper on the way to Stoumont.
Peiper used the Chateaux as staging area for attacks on the Stoumont village and later as prison for American prisoners of war and as hospital for both American and German wounded.
Despite this (and the red cross flags made out of bed sheets on the roofs) seventeen American missiles hit the building in this period, harming no one.

At Stoumont, the more mobile Germans began to learn how to use its heavier firepower to its advantage, especially the flammtracks.
At Stoumont Station, they used the heavy Tank Company with the flammtracks to drive the Americans back.
I would have to give the early game, around Stavlot to the Americans and give the victory to the Germans in the late game around Stoumont and Stoumont Station.
