Stowe was owned by one of the most powerful families in 18th-century England, and was effectively the seat of power in the country for several decades.

The gardens and parkland at Stowe were one of the first of a new style of landscaped parkland that evolved into what we now call the English landscape garden.
The gardens at Stowe were begun in the early 18th century by Sir Richard Temple, Viscount Cobham, with the aid of Charles Bridgeman, William Kent, and later, Capability Brown.
This had the effect of opening up the gardens to the surrounding fields, creating a sense of unity with the pastoral surroundings, so that even the sheep grazing in nearby fields became a part of the overall landscape garden "design".

Although the buildings at Stowe Landscape Gardens are visually attractive in the landscape, closer inspection reveals that many were built "on the cheap" for maximum effect, leaving the Trust with a huge and expensive restoration task ahead of them.
My favourite building at Stowe Landscape Gardens is the Gothic Temple, set in a commanding position on a hilltop, it has a triangular floor plan and is quite unique in appearance.
