Topic: Straferunning

Online Encyclopedia and Dictionary - Straferunning
Straferunning is a tactic which has developed within the first person shooter genre.
Roughly, it allows the player to run faster through levels by moving forwards and sidewards at the same time.
Since straferunning became popular and it is widely regarded as Metagaming, many games have thought up special rules which would cause the straferunning player to become actually slower than normal running.

Basic Straferunning   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Straferunning is accomplished by activating both a strafe key and a forward/backward key at the same time.
In Doom2, straferunning causes the player to run at a 38.6 degree angle, and most importantly, it is 28 % faster than normal running.
There are 4 directions that you can straferun: angled forward and to the left, forward and to the right, backward and to the left, and backward and to the right.

For example, if you are straferunning angled to the left, and your opponant pops around the corner in front of you and darts past you on your left, and you pivot hard to the left and fire the instant after you are turned.
Straferunning down the hallway that is north of the plasma gun, and bumping the platform, bumping it while turning to the left hand side (east) seems to help.
Straferunning backwards is mostly a manuverability option when having hallway battles, especially where SuperShotgun and BFG are used,  and regular running backwards is a defensive manuver, usually while retreating with a less effective weapon than your opponent has.

These manuvers are the basics of straferunning, and it is how I learned to do it, and how I have taught others.
Straferunning effectively inside of corridors is clearly more difficult than moving in an open area.
Straferunning backwards through corridors is even harder...so I am leaving these topics as a discussion for intermediate skilled players, which is after the beginning player has had time to feel at-home straferunning in the open.

Given that you're pushed along the wall parallel_X twice due to the bug, and then moved parallel_X after, that's 3 times parallel_X.
Seeing as the maximum straferunning speed is 128% normal maximum speed that gives a figure of 384% times normal maximum speed for wallrunning.
Of course these are ideals and should be impossible to reach (as q = 0 so you're not moving into the wall at all so the effect is not triggered!)

Here you will mostly be trying to work your way through large parts crowded with bigger monsters, dying a fair bit more often than in the other maps.
Because you often have to run really long sretches back if you've just died you can improve your straferunning and SR50 skills here too if you feel up to it.
Once this one comes on the coop rotation I demand you to play this.

The Doom Marine is pretty damn fast as per this quote below i remember 've found someone's calculations based on the game engine that the doomguy moves at about 70 mph (normal running).
straferunning is 128% (http://www.doom2.net/doom2/sr50.html) faster, hence 90 mph.
If you want to see how fast a human would be carrying that equipment, load the game up and set it to turbo 30.

I stand by the deathmatch part of the statement, though.
It seems like [a] 90% of the time the map is some PWAD which is highly symmetrical, so nobody ever knows which way is north anyway, and [b] that slight hitch before the acceleration starts, especially when straferunning, can be enough of a delay to get one's head taken off.
I hedged a little bit on the MAP18 reference, for reasons that I hope are obvious in the demo — if that wall were 10 times as long, it would contain 10 times as many snags, and I'm not sure that would do a lot for my confidence in a deathmatch game.
