Double act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When a woman is in the "straight man" role, she is more often referred to as a comic foil.
Sometimes, it is the straight man who gets the laughs through his or her sarcastic reactions to the comic's antics.
In its British form, the two actors would usually be comprised of a "straight man" or "feed" and a "comic", the purpose of the feed being to set up jokes for the comic.

Straight man - The TV IV
A straight man (or comic foil, to include women) is the person in a comedy who is serious, reasonable or simply normal.
The term derives from vaudeville and its comic duos, in which the straight man was distinguised from the "comic", who would be the bizarre, foolish or funny character.
In many comedies, the straight man is confused and even outraged by the actions going on around him or her, while in others, the straight man is an instigator and may even manipulate or verbally abuse the comic or comics.

Whatever it is the man is doing when not writing, he has got to stop.
Until he realizes his obligation to suffering humanity, we will have to be satisfied with "Straight Man," which is no hardship, because it satisfies completely.
The title derives from Hank's frequent comment, "In English departments the most serious competition is for the role of straight man," a notion that Russo -- his single flaw -- never adequately develops or clarifies.

Janos Maté, a long-time opponent of keeping whales and dolphins in captivity, told the Straight that he is considering putting his name forward at the September 25 COPE nomination meeting as a potential park-board candidate.
On one occasion, he lived in the cage for six days; on the other, he fasted inside his cell for 38 hours to highlight the suffering of beluga whales after they’ve been captured from the wild.
Maté told the Straight that he strongly favours allowing a referendum on this issue in the November civic election.

Straight Plan for the Gay Man | PopMatters Television Review
Straight Plan for the Gay Man is a send-up of Queer Eye that, as its title announces, reverses the roles of its gay and straight participants.
Each week, a gay man who is curious about what it would be like to experience some facet of the straight world gets his wish granted by four spirited, 20something, gay-friendly heterosexual males.
While the gay man who is transformed is an actual person, the straight guys are not, like the Fab Five, professionals in their respective fields, but comedians.

Straight Man just seems to be another fairly mediocre book of the grocery store book aisle type.

 Mower Man - Straight Story
Straight crossed the river at Marquette, but Lynch liked the "character" of the Lansing bridge better than the concrete bridges that connect Marquette and Prairie du Chien, Wis.
Straight made the trip on the lawn mower because he had poor eyesight and didn't have a driver's license.
Lynch was attracted to the story because of the human interest angle, as well as the chance to shoot a movie outside, on location and during the harvest season, said Pope.

Having read and savored Nobody's Fool, Mohawk, and The Risk Pool, I eagerly jumped into Russo's latest work, only to be disappointed by the inexplicably overwhelming high praise for Straight Man. Whereas the characters in his previous novels were flawed but yet endearing, those in Straight Man are just flawed and rather pathetic.
Some characters are well written, but they are for the most part typecast stereotypes (for example: "Orshe," the token ponytailed male feminist who is so named because he always says "or she" when someone uses "he" as a generic pronoun...
I read The Risk Pool and enjoyed it, but I really LOVE Straight Man. The characters are ones we can relate to and can find a counterpart in our own lives.

The straight American male has heard exaggerated tales of the non-stop bacchanalia that many assume is the homosexual lifestyle.
Such historical food for thought probably doesn't inspire many straight males to purchase trampolines, Playstations and NAMBLA memberships, but it may make them wonder why it's considered "hot" for their female friends to make out with each other, but "gay" (with the attending negative connotation) for them to try the same thing with other guys.
The problem is that, through the ages, from Manifest Destiny through World War II to American cultural imperialism, American "rugged individualism" has embedded itself at the core of the straight man's psyche as a set of values which implicitly forbid any sexual union not ordained by the Christian god.

I love Straight Man! I've read it three times, which is some kind of record for me — and even though Russo's other books, which include Empire Falls and The Whore's Child, are terrific in their own right, I think Straight Man will always be my sentimental favorite.

The problem with straights in gay clubs is that 99% of them treat it as a combination freak show/demonstration of how daring and hip they are.
