But "Straight to Hell" is an indulgent mess, a movie so uneasy about itself that the press release is prefaced with this quote by Joe Strummer of the Clash: "Yuppies are gonna hate it." Strummer is right, but he need not have stopped so soon.
"Straight to Hell" was "filmed in three weeks on a shoestring budget of $1 million," but looks more as if it were filmed in one week on Cox's MasterCard.
"Straight to Hell" is simply a record of aimless behavior, of a crowd of pals asked to dress up like cowboys and mill about on a movie set.

Straight to Hell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Straight to Hell is a 1987 film by Alex Cox, featuring Sy Richardson, The Clash frontman Joe Strummer, Courtney Love, Dick Rude, Dennis Hopper, Grace Jones, Elvis Costello, Xander Berkeley, Kathy Burke, Jim Jarmusch, Edward Tudor-Pole, and members of The Pogues, Amazulu and The Circle Jerks.
The plot of Straight to Hell (if there can be said to be one) concerns three inept hitmen (played by Richardson, Rude, and Strummer) who, after blowing a job, rob a bank and flee to Mexico to escape the wrath of their boss (played by Jim Jarmusch).
Straight to Hell was rated "R" for violence and language.

 STRAIGHT TO HELL
STRAIGHT TO HELL with maybe the exception of Zander Schloss looks like they're having the time of their life; unfortunately that doesn't translate to the audience.
STRAIGHT TO HELL has been released widescreen (1.85:1) which is a huge improvement over the videotape which neither paned nor scanned just held dead center in the frame.
STRAIGHT TO HELL is quite good and worth seeking out - it features music by The Pogues, Joe Strummer, Zander Schloss and others - unfortunately it's out of print in the States right now.

Straight Dope Staff Report: Who invented Hell?
I didn't really understand their explanation, saying there were several different words in the original language that referred to a "place of the dead," which, over time, have been changed into Hell to scare the common folk into doing what the church says.
They said Hell is not a place, but a state of being in which you suffer from being away from God.
Theologians and philosophers debate whether Hell is a physical place or a state of mind, and, if a real place, whether souls really burn for eternity or are consumed by the flames.

Straight To Hell is THE band I always wanted to be in because these guys can write excellent songs that somewhat capture the elements of old US HC, Japanese and Scandinavian HC, as well as a bit of metal and punk.
Those were significant factors which contributed to the demise of Ulcer and Paindriver, so I'm thankful to finally be in a band with members who are reading on the same page and pulling their own weight.
So far it hasn't deviated much from those last two bands, although the 'political' styled lyrics of Ulcer are kind of toned down, and the fake posi youth/scene unity crap of Paindriver has been thrown in the trash where it belongs (I didn't write those cheesy songs, by the way).

His new album, Straight To Hell, is the first I've ever heard that straddles the hallowed ground between Bill Monroe and Mötörhead, between "Blue Moon of Kentucky" and "Ace of Spades." At some point late in your first run through the record, it will hit you that you haven't once heard a distorted guitar.
Straight To Hell is a fascinating and feckless record, raw and rambling and full of piss and whiskey.
Straight To Hell is not an easy album, and it's not a perfect one, but it'll do just fine.

Instead we have Straight to Hell's title track, which opens the record with a staid, tongue-in-cheek cover of the Louvin Brothers' "Satan is Real," erupts into "Iron Man"-lite Satanic laughter and then plummets straight into bluegrass self-parody.
Then there's Straight to Hell's semi-bonus second disc, which would be bizarre even if its parent album weren't so eccentric in its own right.
But I sure as hell like him on CD as well because it offers up more musicianship at times than the live act when someone doesnt show up, etc. This is good country music, some of the best I've ever heard.

 ‘Straight to Hell’ (R)
"Straight to Hell," a movie by Alex Cox, is a sort of post- apocalyptic spaghetti-western parody -- which already makes it sound better than it is.
Cox, who made "Repo Man," assembles a punkpourri of rock and film celebs acceptable to hip urbanites, such as musicians Joe Strummer, Elvis Costello, Grace Jones and the Pogues, as well as film culties Dennis Hopper and Jim Jarmusch.
Cox seems to have made this with unpretentious abandon, so "Hell" doesn't merit serious lambasting.

Alex Cox's "Straight To Hell" is such a strange and unique pop film that I'm not quite sure how to go about reviewing it.
The soundtrack is a pseudo-Western and Latin mixture of Pogues, Pray For Rain, and Joe Strummer, which works excellently in the film, as well as outside it.

"You're Going Straight To Hell" words & music by Mrs. Betty Bowers
Well, as any True Christian can tell you, the Lord has told us that the road to Heaven is narrow and while many are called, few are choosen.
In other words, it is clearly God's plan that most people should be consigned to an eternity in an imminently disagreeable Hell.
Most Christian music, however, ignores a potentially vast audience that needs to hear the "Good News:" That they are going straight to Hell.

So it's something of a miracle to see a 2-CD set of some of III's most hardcore Hellbilly (as opposed to the relentless screaming of his Assjack), especially as a number of the songs had been scheduled to appear on his unreleased 2003 album Thrown Out of the Bar.
Hank III calls the new offering--recorded mostly on a $500 machine, for a DIY sound--a "thrill ride into a life of sin." This may explain the fact that Straight to Hell, which opens with some old-fashioned gospel and abruptly ends with the sound of a belly-laughing Satan, comes with a parental advisory sticker.
