A corset is a garment worn to mold the torso into a desired shape for aesthetic or orthopaedic purposes (either for the duration of wearing it, or with a more lasting effect).
Some corsets were made of cloth or leather, and many included steel or whalebone or plastic ribs.
The corset fell from fashion in the 1920s in Europe and America, replaced by girdles and elastic brassiere, but survived as an article of costume.

Corset tight lacing was (in my opinion) a hobby which feminists of the day took part in.
I agree that many women who are "into" corseting are into it because of their partners; my partner enjoys it, also, but he is not the main reason I enjoy my corset.

I've been browsing some websites and looking at recent images and most of the types are women, who practice tightlacing when no one sees and take a lot of pictures of themselves in their beadroom wearing their corsets and their underwear or nothing at all.
I personally love them because they channel the shape of corsets from the baroque/rococo period...in fact, at vivienne westwood's VandA exhibit, a janet arnold (a revered costume historian) book, called patterns of fashion: 1660 to 1860, was displayed, open to the a page about 18th century corset pattern drafting.
These are a great example of contemporary corsets that go right, although most i have to agree are either fashionably wrong or just pornagraphic.
