The Strait of Georgia (also known as Georgia Strait and the Gulf of Georgia) is a 240 km (150 mi)-long strait between Vancouver Island (as well as its nearby Gulf Islands) and the mainland Pacific coast of British Columbia, Canada.
The southern end of the strait is the intersection of Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, while the northern end is Johnstone Strait.
The strait is a major navigation channel on the west coast of North America, owing to the presence of the port of Vancouver.

We found a significant and striking difference in young-of-the-year lingcod catch density between the northern and southern regions in the Strait of Georgia, with far fewer fish found in the south (Figure 1).
A greater understanding of how larval and juvenile lingcod move among areas and utilize the Strait of Georgia is necessary in order to draw conclusions regarding the strength of any given year class.
We are also studying larval dispersal and nearshore habitat use of newly settled lingcod in the spring of 2004.

The Strait of Georgia is a semi-enclosed sea on Canada's west coast.
Our field sampling will involve (i) using automated oceanographic instruments to sample water and plankton along the various BC Ferries routes that cross the Strait of Georgia, and (ii) conducting monthly oceanographic cruises in the Strait of Georgia from a high-speed hovercraft operated by the Canadian Coast Guard.
Using the oceanographic data we collect, in conjunction with historical data collected in the Strait, we will use a series of ecosystem models to simulate the interactions between physics and biology in the Strait.
