The Strait of Juan de Fuca separates Vancouver Island of British Columbia from the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state.
The Strait of Juan de Fuca is the principal outlet for the Georgia Strait and Puget Sound, connecting both to the Pacific Ocean.
It was named in 1788 by the English Captain John Meares of the ship Felice for Juan de Fuca, the Greek sailor who claimed to have gone on a voyage with Spanish explorers in 1592 to seek the fabled Strait of Anián.

Juan De Fuca, of whom the Juan de Fuca strait is named, explored parts of Saskatchewan in 1791.
Although Saskatchewan did not exist as a province at that point, Juan De Fuca was commissioned by the Spanish King Carlos IV to explore the west coast before the Russians in an attempt to colonize more land.
Juan De Fuca, as part of the Francisco Eliza expeditions 1790-92 went inland along the west coast of North America along the First Nations trade routes.

He sailed through the Strait of Juan de Fuca (which was named for him in 1725) and believed it to be the beginning of a route to the Atlantic Ocean.
After sailing back to Acapulco, Mexico, de Fuca was not rewarded by Spain for his journey, and his discovery of the strait was not entirely believed until Captain Vancouver retraced de Fuca's route 200 years later.

The Strait of Juan de Fuca, approximately 102 miles in length and 10 to 18 miles wide, is the access route to the Pacific Ocean from Puget Sound and the Strait of Georgia.

Juan de Fuca (born 1536 as Ioannis Phokas in Kefalonia/Greece; died 1602 in Zákynthos/Greece, often reported as Apostolos Valerianos), was a Greek captain employed by Spain to sail northward from Mexico and look for a northern passage from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean.
In 1592, his exploration took him into the body of water, the Strait of Juan de Fuca (since 1788 named after him).
The Juan de Fuca Plate, which also bears his name, is a tectonic plate subducting under the northerly portion of the western side of the North American Plate along the coasts of Oregon and Washington States in the US.

Colleagues at the University of Victoria, the Institute of Ocean Sciences, and University of British Columbia are investigating flow in the Strait as well, and there are collaborations on fieldwork such as the June 2000 cruise.

 Province misses the boat on Victoria’s sewage problem
By not committing its 1/3 share for a new sewage plant, the government is allowing the CRD to continue flaunting the province's environmental protection laws, and to remain the only major center in Canada that is not committed to treating its sewage.
The CRD dumps 120 million litres of raw sewage a day into the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the body of water separating British Columbia from Washington State.
A sixty square kilometre area around the outfalls is closed to all shellfish harvest and to the swimming scallop fishery due to high fecal coliform counts.

This summary report is an expanded abstract of the second year (2002) of field studies conducted in the Strait of Juan de Fuca (the “Strait”) for the NOAA Fisheries-sponsored offshore mariculture feasibility study described in prior reports (Rensel and Forster 2002a, 2002b).
The precise cause(s) of the differences are unknown, but may relate to constriction of the Strait to its narrowest width at this point.
