  Sicily
Sicily was invaded by United States troops on 9 and 10 July 1943 and by British troops on 10 July.
Sicily fitted out at Portland, Oreg., loaded supplies at Seattle, and then sailed for San Diego where she held shakedown training during April and May. On 15 May, she was ordered to proceed to New York, via the Panama Canal and Norfolk.
Sicily was notified on 2 July that she was needed in the Far East; and she sailed, two days later, for the first of three deployments to Korean waters.

To a great extent, the history of Sicily is the history of families, and a few of the island's aristocratic houses, such as the Lanza and Alliata, trace their lineages from the Norman era.
Although Sicily boasts the best genealogical resources in Italy, access to those resources is not always a simple matter, and the work of tracing a lineage usually takes a great deal of time and a certain amount of money.

CIESM - the Mediterranean Marine Research Network
The concept of a subsurface Mediterranean outflow through the Strait of Gibraltar was established by the ingenious laboratory experiments of Marsigli in the late 17th century.
Today most of the scientific interest in straits focuses on the dynamics and mixing of water masses, on the interference with meso- and small-scale structures, on the determination of maximal versus submaximal exchange, and on a host of issues related to flow with multiple density layers.
Looking at straits from an ecological perspective, one is struck by their vulnerability to traffic and by their critical role in allowing the transfer of marine species between adjacent seas.

In this scenario an important role is played by the Sicily Strait dividing the two principal sub-basins: the Eastern and the Western Mediterranean.
A long-term monitoring of the hydrographic properties of water masses across this strait initiated in the second half of the ‘80s allowed us to evidence the principal time scales of the water exchange between the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
In particular, from a nearly annual observations we could observe the effects produced in the Sicily Strait by the water masses produced by the climatic transient occurred in the Eastern Mediterranean from its origin in the late ‘80s to the present phase of relaxation.

The Italian government wants to span the 2-mile Messina Strait separating Sicily from Calabria with the world’s longest suspension bridge of its kind.
They have actually been “preparing” the terrain for the Bridge’s construction for quite a while thanks to a system of social alliances and mechanisms involving media, economy, sections of the judiciary and universities as well as organised crime and masonic lodges.
Were the Strait area not dominated by a single editorial group with a manufacturing of consent that is every bit as efficient at the local level as it is ramified and extended at the national level, there would probably have been fruitful debate on a whole range of projects.
