Sidescan sonar and seismic surveys reveal a drowned, ancestral meandering river course on the lake floor of Lago Huiñaimarca, the smaller of the two lake basins that comprise Lake Titicaca.
A detailed sidescan sonar mosaic shows that the river channel extends 4.5 km northeastward from the eastern end of the Strait of Tiquina (-24 m water depth) into the Chua Basin, the deepest portion (40 m) of Lago Huiñaimarca, where it terminates in a distributary complex.
We suggest that rising lake level within Lago Chucuito overtopped the sill at the Strait of Tiquina and began flowing into the Chua Basin some time after 5.2 14C ka, which led to the formation of the meandering river.
