Tiran is an island belonging to Saudi Arabia at the entrance of the Straits of Tiran, which separates the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba.
The island is leased to Egypt, to support the presence of an observation post controlled by the Multinational Force and Observers and an Egyptian Coastal Patrol post.
It is of strategic significance in the area, as it forms the narrowest section of the Straits of Tiran, which is an important sea passage to ports in Jordan and Israel.

This is a particular concern at the Strait of Tiran, at the southern end of the Gulf of Aqaba, where territorial claims have also been subject to various interpretations in international law.
In the case of the Strait of Tiran, Egypt holds _de facto_ control of the islands at the mouth of the Gulf, and attempted to blockade the Strait during times of war.
This is potentially relevant for the Strait of Tiran, because the Peace Treaty of 1979 specifying the bilateral regime for Israel and Egypt was signed in advance of the 1982 Convention.

The Straits are actually named after the Island of Tiran which is of volcanic origin and is a part of the African Trench, making this area of the Gulf of Aqaba, which is over 1000 metres deep, one of the deepest parts of the entire Red Sea.
GORDON REEF with its Lighthouse is the most eastern point of the Straits; another freighter wreck sits here on the reef table, almost parallel to the one on Jackson Reef.
A huge variety of reef fish and big schools of groupers can be seen here and on the sandy bottom at 4 to 5 metres, lots of Garden Eels are sticking out of the sea bed moving gently in the currents.
