Stranded (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stranded is the third album by art rock band Roxy Music, and was released late 1973, reaching number one on the UK album charts.
It was the first Roxy Music album on which Bryan Ferry was no longer the only songwriter, because Andy Mackay and guitarist Phil Manzarena also contributed to the album.
The track "Street Life" was released as a single and reached number 9 on the UK charts.

Stranded is the third album released by Roxy Music, and it also ushers in the coming of the ex-Curved Air violinist/keyboardist virtuoso, Eddie Jobson.
The sound on Stranded is tighter and not as frenetic as the first two Roxy albums, but this sound helped pave the way for the gothic/new romantic/new wave scene.
Also Stranded was the first time that songs were co-written with another band member: the funky, heavy footed "Amazona", and the progressive "A Song For Europe", the first written with the assistance of Phil and the latter with Andy.

Ground and Sky review - Roxy Music - Stranded
Stranded was one of the hardest of their early albums for me to get into, but out of all of them, it's provided the biggest pay-off in the long run.
That album, Stranded, is considered by many fans and writers (as well as by Eno) to be Roxy Music's best record.
Stranded sounds a bit sleeker and more conventional than either For Your Pleasure or the debut album, but not tremendously so.

BIG NECK RECORDS - THE MISTREATERS REVIEWS
"Stranded" is a monster and the other three (also on their great demo) slide along a two/three chord groove and suddenly explode into screaming and chaos, catchy too.
This album (especially the near-flawless A Side) takes the strengths of the single - loose garage hunch 'n roll - and ups the ante with the rock-solid balls they've been, uh, flexing onstage as of late.
Their debut album (which appears on Reston, Virginia's premier subterranean rock label BIG NECK) is not only bursting with raw energy, but the group's style of garge music is a throwback to a time when every kid wished he could one day rock as hard as this.

The first half of this album has got to be one of the most interesting, diverse, atmospheric, inventive and entertaining album halves I've ever come across, but the second half can only claim the "inventive" title of the first.
When I finished listening to this album for the first time, and I sat for a bit taking it all in, I realized very quickly why it was that so many (Even Eno, supposedly and surprisingly) have eagerly deemed this as their favorite Roxy album.
Sure, there's a level on which this album could be considered as boring as hell, and somebody coming to this from the 70's stuff might be mortified, but for the direction they took, this is about as good of a destination as they could have pulled off.

Stan had lost his major label contract, and wrote these songs based on his dreams in the summer of 1995 -- the album is "dedicated to all dreams and spirits everywhere." It was released on the tiny Birdcage Records, and it is great to see it reissued by New West.
The album sounds fantastic to me. Although a lot of things on it have elements reminiscent of earlier work (let's face it, Stan does have a limited number of themes in his briefcase), it certainly expands his body of work into new directions.
Stranded is a very good song -- more sophisticated lyrically and musically than much of Ridgway's recent output.

This is a fascinating album in that it is a picture of that last moment before true greatness breaks...
The change that happened shortly after this album release to usher in the greatness was - Brian Eno left the band - and both parties got better in the doing.
So, I don't care for "The Strand" too much, at least by 2006, and find it a mixed bag including weak and dated lyrical moments ("a danceable solution...to teenage revolution") which seems most directed at their English fan base at the time than the void of eternity.

They are able to bring us back to 1970 not with the usual bell-bottomed conventions and wah-wah clichés employed by so many retro-funk wannabe’s, but by reaching back to the original source of all that good music: sincerity, integrity, melody, and an unwavering loyalty to rhythm.
