Stranded wire is as a rule (and we all know rules are made to be broken) easier to work with and can at times be stronger.
Stranded wire is usually more flexible so if you are not putting out a straight wire or bringing it into a house or apartment it may be superior to solid core wire.
Thickness The thickness of wire is measured by its gauge.

It is called stranded wire, it is flexible and is listed to carry amperage with the same AWG codes.
The only problem with stranded wire is that in reality it does not meet the AWG codes as does solid wire.
The wire they use to run power to stoves in homes that have stranded wire are greatly under rated.

There is a theory that electrons run on the surface are of the wire so that fine stranded wire will carry more current than a coarse stranded wire.
This is a theory that the internal electrons are held by the intermolecular bonds but lab test do show that fine stranded wire does carry more current with less loses due to heat than course stranded wires.
Fine stranded wire like welding cable is also easier to route through a vehicle.

 AVS Forum - Anyone using Romex solid copper wire (for AMP to speaker) ?
I used some heavy wire from work to wire my speakers and then changed to some finely stranded wire and the high end was noticeably brighter and more detailed.
You should try to use wire that is low in capacitance/inductance so that the wire doesn't interact with the impedance of the amp/receiver.
I have read that solid wire is good for the low end but a thinly stranded wire is better for the high end.

Stranded wire is composed of smaller strands of solid copper wire twisted together to form a single, larger conductor.
The greatest benefit of stranded wire is its mechanical flexibility, being able to withstand repeated bending and twisting much better than solid copper (which tends to fatigue and break after time).
Calculating circular-mil wire area for a circular wire is much simpler, due to the fact that the unit of "circular mil" was sized just for this purpose: to eliminate the "pi" and the d/2 (radius) factors in the formula.

 Speaker Wire
The speaker wires were switched at both the power amplifier and the speaker so that only one kind of wire was connected at a time.
It is difficult to understand why the relatively short lengths of internal house wiring can make a difference, when the "ordinary" wire in the power lines, right through the distribution transformer in the back yard and stretching for miles and miles to the generating station, does not influence the sound.
This reminds me of the comparison with speaker wire where the voice coil wire is ordinary copper wire that is far longer than the wires from the amplifier to the speakers.

Stranded wire, and silver plate have been tried in the past, and for a number of reasons failed, except in PSU cabling where flexibilty and insulation are a prime consideration.
Stranded wire is probably a little better for reliability reasons in an environment where one expects vibration.
Litz wire is pretty much open to your definition of it I guess.

The diameter data we reference a table we found on Coilcraft's web site (thanks, Dudes!) We calculated the ohms/meter and ohms/foot based on the conductivity of pure copper (the actual resistance will be slightly more).
Here's some AWG trivia: the AWG scale was once called the Brown and Sharpe (BandS) wire gauge.
The values are for insulated wire, you can achieve higher current levels if you use bare wire, just don't kill yourself.

It is not that the wire is stranded that increases attenuation -- it's the frequency range being propagated and the mechanism for attenuation at that frequency.
But the wire you are talking about is stranded with the strands uninsulated.
The loss mechanism at 350 MHz is due to the insulating material surrounding the wire; that is, the dielectric.

The commom use for starnded wire springs is for helical springs.
When the spring is compressed the strand is subjected to a twisting moment which causes the wires in the strand to forcefully stick to each other thereby creating a friction effect that adds a damping property to the spring.
However, when you use a strand for a helical torsion spring the strand is subjected to bending moment only therefore, I do not see the reason for using a straned wire for helical torsion spring.

Location: Northeast OH I have also heard others mention that the stranded wire is better for the track feeders because it will handle the expansion and contraction of the track better than the solid, since it contains it's own built in "strain relief".
After twisting the strands together, tinning the ends allows you bend the "L" or "7" configuration for the feeders, which keeps the shape during soldering.
I would recomend that you use the recommendations on wire size even if you are wiring for DC so that if (or should I say When) you go to DCC you will be already in a good position to convert the layout.

As for stranded or solid wire, you usually use stranded where you need flexibility in the cable.
Solid wire is stiffer and has a larger minimum bend radius for a given gage wire, but you don't have to worry about controlling the individual strands.
There is also a fused stranded wire where the wire is stranded, but the strands are held together with solder, so the wire is really a cross between stranded and solid.

This is not to be confused with the loop inductance in coils...
All else being equal, stranded wire is > measureably lossier than solid section, presumably due to skin > effect artifacts.
I am not > saying that a resonator built with stranded wire will produce inferior > results however - primary losses and output spark losses are > dominant.

One is 40lb which is plastic coated wire and the other is 7 strand wraped wire.
Also, I guess I could elaborate,I experimented at PWYP last year, and found that the small leader wire was wonderfully strong, and I thought it would work well, but in practice, the loop was too springy, and would not stay tight.
Also, when concerned with stranded cable, this was the info given me as a guide years ago, and I wrote it down.
