Stranger than Paradise, Jarmusch’s first feature film, still remains his best not because the man behind it was still, at the time of the film’s production, untainted and wide-eyed, but because the times themselves called for an American filmmaker like Jarmusch.
She is also the first outsider in Jarmusch’s parade of outsider-heroes who enter a strange new world and by their sheer presence inevitably call attention to clashes of culture, style, and philosophy.
Stranger than Paradise was hip in the best sense of the word—an originator of the desisting, gawky humor that forever influenced American independent filmmaking.

I was invited to a screening at the Film Forum of a new half-hour short called Stranger Than Paradise, by Janet Perlberg (who worked at FF) and her boyfriend John.
John Lurie, the lanky saxophonist leader of The Lounge Lizards, played Willie in the film and also composed the score; Richard Edson, the original drummer in Sonic Youth, caught Jarmusch's eye while drumming for the dance band Konk, and was cast in the film as Eddie.
With the money in place, Sara quit her job with me and went off to finish "Stranger." After they it was done, they got into Cannes and came back with the Camera d'Or, the prize for Best First Film at the festival in 1984.

dOc DVD Review: Stranger Than Paradise (1984)
It's difficult to nail down the appeal of Stranger Than Paradise—it's funny, but not in an easily quotable way; it's truthful, though its truths are not immediately self-evident; and it's not in the least bit romantic.
It's better than nothing, but without narration or explanatory titles, the net effect is like watching a stranger's home movies—there are some recognizable elements from the film, but not enough substance to make the footage meaningful or interesting.
Stranger Than Paradise is a subtly rich, naturalistic film about family, friendship and aimlessness in America.

Strangers than Paradise demolishes all presuppositions about narrative and plot, even the minimal expectations one might have from a road movie.
