And eventually, 23 Strangeways prisoners would receive a total of 140 years imprisonment for their part in what the Home Office described on that April Sunday as "a serious disturbance".
The report concluded that conditions had indeed been intolerable and that Strangeways prisoners felt, with some justification, their complaints had not been listened to.
Of the prisoners who were tried for their role in the Strangeways riot, all bar one have served their sentences for related offences.

The Smiths: Strangeways, Here We Come ---Ink Blot Magazine
Second LP Meat Is Murder solidified their fanbase but The Smiths were rightfully considered a singles band until 1985 tour de force Strangeways, Here We Come.
Another ungodly run of singles (collected on U.S.-only comp Strangeways, Here We Come) followed, but the pressures of newfound fame drove a wedge between the band's songwriting duo and difficult fourth album Strangeways, Here We Come proved to be their last.
Morrissey and Marr were hardly speaking to one another when they recorded Strangeways, Here We Come - never mind how they felt about the unfairly maligned hired help on bass and drums - and they didn't even wait for the album's official release before allowing the word of the band's split to get out.

 Splendid: Departments: The Essential Albums
The recurring meeting between teen vulnerability and the amber resin-trapped perfection of the entire Smiths legacy means there'll always be new fans to suck off the band's personality and claim it as part of their own.
The sleeve of Strangeways, Here We Come, the band's fourth and final album, includes a photo of an exasperated Mike Joyce (or possibly Johnny Marr) leaning on a stool, hands over his eyes in fed-up despair.
But again, the recording of Strangeways with Stephen Street was anything but tumultuous, and the music reflects a band at the same incredibly potent, unified level as the one who had made The Queen is Dead a year prior.

His tone here is both that of sympathetic agony aunt and wicked, wicked mockery, the track ending with his (quite purposely) audible wretching.
I passionately hoped this was not to be their last breath, but nevertheless, in case you haven't guessed by now, Strangeways, Here We Come is a masterpiece that surpasses even The Queen Is Dead in terms of poetic, pop, and emotional power.

"Strangeways" is the album that, ironically, kicked my fascination with the Smiths into full gear (having previously dabbled in their better known songs and a little bit of Morrissey).
I had never before (and never since) heard anything like "A Rush and A Push and the Land Is Ours" so enthralled with it was I, that I scrawled the lyrics on the bottom of my roommates bunk bed so I could read them over and over.
I'm pretty sure every bad habit I now have began while listening to this album, and heck, that's got to be worth something.

Released in 1987 following a particularly protracted period of emotional and professional turmoil between visionaries Morrissey and Marr, Strangeways Here We Come was largely written off as something of a creative miss-step following the dizzying eclecticism of 1985's classic, The Queen is Dead...
However, one look at the credit sheet here will disprove this theory immediately, with Marr acting as both the musical arranger and the co-producer of the record (alongside Morrissey and Stephen Street), as well as playing all the guitar parts and the piano.
As far as I'm concerned, Strangeways Here We Come is easily as good as The Queen is Dead, and remains one of my favourite albums to listen to when at the height of despair!!

From the epic instrumental introduction to "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" to the dark instrumentation of "Death Of A Disco Dancer", STRANGEWAYS HERE WE COME is a sonically rich album, filled with extremes and surprises.
Among its many highlights are its signature tune "Girlfriend In A Coma", and the stingingly autobiographical "Paint A Vulgar Picture", which also happens to contain one of the most inspired, melodic guitar passages of Johnny Marr's legendary career.
Produced by future Morrissey collaborator Stephen Street, STRANGEWAYS is a document of a band's "fierce last stand".

In 1987, the Smiths released their final studio album, Strangeways, Here We Come.
Named after a notorious (and now renamed) Manchester prison, the first side of the album is regarded as superb by many fans, while the second side is maligned as evidence of the breakdown within the group.
The album starts off with "A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours", one of the few Smiths songs to feature no guitar.
