Mesoplodont whale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some other whale species share this property, and together they are known as the beaked whales.
The mesoplodont whales are the fourteen species of whale that make up the genus Mesoplodon, making it the single largest genus in the cetacean order.
Longman's Beaked Whale (also known as the Indo-Pacific Beaked Whale) is also sometimes classed in the Mesoplodon genus.

Indopacetus. Who is Indopacetus? What is Indopacetus? Where is Indopacetus? Definition of Indopacetus. Meaning of Indopacetus.
Longman's Beaked Whale, commonly also called the Indo-Pacific Beaked Whale either has the specific name Indopacetus pacificus or Mesoplodon pacificus, depending whether the animal is classified as a mesoplodont whale or not.
The features of this unknown whale - in particular its length and well-defined crease between the melon and the beak - do not match those of any other member of the Ziphiid family in the area and do match what little has been inferred about Longman's Beaked Whale.
However there have been 45 reports of an unidentified cetacean locally known as the Tropical Bottlenose Whale in the temperate to tropic waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans [4] (including some photographs - see [1]).

 WHALE DEATH PROMPTS WARNING
Centre director Padraig Duignan said it looked as though the strap-toothed whale -- a member of the beaked whale family -- was hit by a boat propeller, fracturing its upper jaw and causing a large gash, which would have bled profusely.
One way to determine the species was to look at the tooth placement in grown males, but with this whale the tooth had not erupted yet, he said.
Dr Duignan said whales and dolphins were often difficult to see in the water, but boaties needed to be careful if they were travelling in areas where they were known to be.

 Amazing Whale Facts
Whales belong to the mammalian order Cetacea, and are divided into two groups, Baleen (or whale-bone) whales and Toothed whales.
Whales are able to control the flow of blood to the heart and brain so that they do not suffer from lack of oxygen on deep dives.
Whales are able to grow to such enormous sizes because their weight is supported by the water.

 Factsheets - Strap-toothed Whale
The Strap-toothed Whale feeds primarily on squid, deep-sea fish, crustaceans and possibly echinoderms (sea urchins and starfish) found on the sea floor.
For Strap-toothed Whales, the colour pattern of juveniles may be indistinct.
The common name of this whale refers to the unusual strap-like teeth of adult males.

Whaling, entrapment in nets, habitat destruction, competition with humans for food, human disturbances, and marine pollution have all had their effects on whales and dolphins.
When the whales feed, they swim with their mouths open, trapping the minute plankton and krill which is the main component of most baleen whales' diet.

 Facts on Dolphins
The strange-looking strap-toothed beaked whale has only two teeth in its lower jaw that wrap up and over its upper jaw preventing it from opening its mouth very wide.
Toothed whales eat a variety of fish, squid, and crustaceans.
Baleen is a stiff structure with bristles that enables the whales to strain plankton and small fish from the water.

Furthermore, in a southern hemisphere species, the Strap-toothed Beaked Whale (M. layardii), a male's teeth, may with age, become long and tusk-like.
Another good indicator that beaked whales are not dining with their teeth is the propensity for barnacles to grow on the teeth of some species.
Male beaked whales evidently use those teeth as "jousting weapons." Additionally, some of these assorted marks appear to be battlescars left from shark and killer whale attack.

The whaling maps of Townsend (1935) show that large concentrations of this whale were to be found between 30 and 40°S, west of the Cape of Good Hope.
He suggests that around 4% of the catch may be lost to killer whales and sharks, adding that the crews state killer whale presence may increase or depress catch rates, depending on whether the fish are frightened onto or off the bait.

The true identity of the four whales that washed ashore in the 1970s was revealed in the end by genetic studies that began half a world away, in an effort to trace illegal trade in protected cetacean species.
The whale in question was described by Merel Dalebout of the University of Auckland in New Zealand and James Mead, curator of marine mammals at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, whose joint article will appear next month in the journal Marine Mammal Science.

The whale is of the same family as a strap-toothed beaked whale found dead on Waiinu beach, north of Wanganui last month.
The whales take their name from their unusual “beaked” or pointed snout, with the Shepherd’s Beaked Whale considered unusual because it has a large number of teeth – far more than other beaked whales.
Mr Williams said the whales were a rare species and did not wash up or strand very often, so little was known about them.

 CETACEA: Mesoplodon layardii (Straptoothed Whale)
The Straptoothed Whale was named by British biologist John Gray in 1865, after seeing drawings by the South African Museum's curator, E. Layard, after whom it was eventually named.
The Straptoothed Whale occurs in cold temperate waters.
Although there are more records about the Straptoothed Whale than any other of the Mesoplodon species, it is still a little-known and little-seen cetacean.
