Indie bands mixing rock with folk came and went during the six years between Strapping Fieldhands full-lengths, making 2002 as good a time for a comeback as any.
It's clear the band didn't spend much of the interim practicing; The Third Kingdom is as chaotic and dense a piece of lo-fi sludge rock as anything they'd recorded before.
It's not likely Strapping Fieldhands will convince any Wilco fans with The Third Kingdom, but for fans who've been waiting for another album, there's much fun to be had here.

Splendid Magazine reviews Strapping Fieldhands: The Third Kingdom
Just as quizzically as they disappeared off the face of hip indie rockers' playlists, Philly's Strapping Fieldhands have resurfaced to wow the listening public with another outrageously good release.
With previous releases on Shangri-La, Siltbreeze and their own Omphalos Records, the Fieldhands have consistently received praise from critics, while invariably sneaking beneath the public's musical radar.
To peg The Strapping Fieldhands with a generic label such as "indie-rock" would be a gross mistake indeed.

 Strapping Fieldhands/Photon Band
Brit-influenced noise merchants the Fieldhands have been spending their time working on a bunch of new stuff, which they’ll premiere at the party.
Word is they’ve moved away from some of the folkier stuff and will be strutting out some straight-up rock, done of course as only the Fieldhands can — which means it’ll be a bit raucous, a little poppy and very skewed.
The Photon Band, led by Art Difuria, will rev up their heralded live show (which has featured the band performing in drag) and rock’em, sock’em trio Burning Brides will also perform.

Strapping Fieldhands return to the scene with their first album in five years.
Through Omphalos, the Fieldhands released their debut LP, Discus, which SPIN called one of 1994’s “Ten Best Records You Never Heard." For this release, Omphalos Records has obtained national distribution with Big Daddy Music Distribution.
After disbanding in 1997, the Strapping Fieldhands regrouped in 1999, writing new material and recording.

 Splendid: Features: The Strapping Fieldhands
Though the Fieldhands are based in Philadelphia, PA, they sound like denizens of some stunningly pretty British backwater where people fiddle with radio antennae to pick up faint broadcasts of skiffle, traditional English folk and '60s psychedelic rock.
They're equally adept at shambolic, Syd Barrett-style balladry and barnburning freak rock reminiscent of Pere Ubu or the Godz; usually they strike a balance between the two and end up with music that is self-consciously strange but unpretentious, and beautiful but more than a little unsettling.
Splendid: Your lyrics are often very literate and they seem carefully crafted, but they tend to be buried in the mix or slurred in their delivery.

A mere side project for Bob Malloy, according to the conventional wisdom, it allowed the remaining members of the Strapping Fieldhands to restock their dwindling supply of owl tonic and to gas up the skiffle barge in the port of limbo.
There may well be a kernel of truth in that posit, but now we have a second Ashtabula release, and there hasn't been a collection of new 'Fieldhands recordings sinceÉ well, the last one.

 TINY IDOLS
After nearly ten years apart in the Œ80s, the musicians reformed in 1990 as the Strapping Fieldhands.
The Strapping Fieldhands formed, according to their official bio, "with no other goal than to play around with some sounds among friends and just tape some weird crap to amuse themselves." That plan went out the window when their first single ("Demiurge") on Siltbreeze caused an underground stir.

If you had to produce a list of the influences on American post-punk — in descending order of importance — chances are rustic British folk would rank somewhere near the end.
At times, however, it seems as if that's the only music to have had any impact on Philadelphia's Strapping Fieldhands, an unabashedly Anglophile quintet weaned on the Incredible String Band's Layers of the Onion (with just a dusting of the Bevis Frond for flavor).
Don't call 'em revivalists, though: like kindred lo-fi spirits Guided by Voices, the Fieldhands (aside from percussionist Jeff Werner) are all old enough to remember the stuff as contemporary.

The diverse group of acts--ranging from Am Rep staples such as the Cows, Hammerhead, and Boss Hog to underground weirdos like Guv'ner and Strapping Fieldhands and even major-label stars like the Melvins and Mudhoney--each offer their own insights into the world of sex and, specifically, porn.
Halo of Kittens throws out a rather slopped-together opener called "I Hate Porn," but the Melvins counter with a slick "I Like Porn," which sounds like it belongs in the soundtrack to a porn flick.

But have you heard the psychedelic carnival/marching band/glam/skiffle/prog rock of Strapping Fieldhands?
The group has all the prerequisites to make it your new favorite-band-that-your-friends-never-heard-of: like GBV, the Fieldhands are Anglophiles, mostly over age 35, who prefer the tape hiss of home recording and make songs with strange titles ("Scuttled Kayak Odyssey," "Ben Franklin Airbath") and even stranger reference points (Lonnie Donegan, Syd Barrett).
