The most prominent feature of the ruined abbey is the elaborate western portal of the church, which is regarded as a unique specimen of the transitional Norman-English architecture of the 12th century.
The abbey suffered severely during the Edwardian wars, and in or about 1294 a large portion of its buildings was destroyed by fire, though whether as the result of accident or design remains unknown; in any case Edward I. gave a donation of 75 towards the restoration of the fabric.
By marriage the abbey and the estate of the Stedmans passed into the possession of the family of Powell of Nanteos.

We do not know why or when the abbey was moved to its present position on the banks of the river Teifi, but politics may have played a major part, as in 1166 the Welsh prince of south Wales Rhys ap Gruffydd, conquered Norman holdings in Ceredigion and took control of the area.
They record the close association between the abbey and the house of Deheubarth, and the fact that, during the late 13th century, many of its princes were brought to the abbey for burial.
The abbey was taken over by the military during Glyndwr's war of independence.

Strata Florida became "the foremost monastic community in Wales." Strata Forida's founder was also a Norman: Robert fitz Stephen, "the chief personage in the Clare lordship of Ceredigion."

Talley Abbey is a former monastery of the Premonstratensians or White Canons, located in the village of Talley, Carmarthenshire, Wales, a few miles north of Llandeilo.

When the moat was being dug in the 1860's foundations of the abbey church were found on the south side of the main courtyard, together with patches of tiled flooring.
