Journal of Knowledge Management Practice, October 2002
Hence, alliances motivated by complementarity in knowledge bases tend to facilitate transfer of predominantly explicit (formal) knowledge (most likely in the form of carefully drafted agreements) in relation to a specific project and the level of exchange tends to be predominantly at the executive or senior management level (top-down).
Because homogeneous alliances are concerned with integrating adjacent activities in the value chain, the exchange of knowledge tends to be specific in nature and limited to a particular project or department.
Firm B also engages in the strategic network with the intent of sharing a variety of company specific, knowledge related capabilities, however the knowledge bases of the two partnering firms are asymmetrical allowing for new knowledge to be created as a result of the synergistic interaction.

NATO Ministerial Communiqués: Alliance Strategic Concept - 7 Nov. 1991
Alliance security interests can be affected by other risks of a wider nature, including proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, disruption of the flow of vital resources and actions of terrorism and sabotage.
The supreme guarantee of the security of the Allies is provided by the strategic nuclear forces of the Alliance, particularly those of the United States; the independent nuclear forces of the United Kingdom and France, which have a deterrent role of their own, contribute to the overall deterrence and security of the Allies.
A credible Alliance nuclear posture and the demonstration of Alliance solidarity and common commitment to war prevention continue to require widespread participation by European Allies involved in collective defence planning in nuclear roles, in peacetime basing of nuclear forces on their territory and in command, control and consultation arrangements.

Learning in Strategic Alliances: An Evolutionary Perspective by Karthik Iyer (2002)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Alliances facilitate organizational learning and are “relatively enduring interfirm cooperative arrangements, involving flows and linkages that utilize resources and/or governance structures from autonomous organizations, for the joint accomplishment of individual goals linked to the corporate mission of each sponsoring firm” (Parkhe 1993, p.794).
Alliances span a variety of structures along a continuum: they could be structured as distinct corporate entities or as interorganizational entities, encompassing all of the functional areas or just a single function (Varadarajan and Cunningham 1995).
Since a strategic alliance is a broad rubric encompassing a wide variety of relationships, further research is needed to understand evolution and learning in specific partnerships.

 NATO Press Release NAC-S(99)65 - 24 April 1999
Alliance security interests can be affected by other risks of a wider nature, including acts of terrorism, sabotage and organised crime, and by the disruption of the flow of vital resources.
The Alliance is committed to a broad approach to security, which recognises the importance of political, economic, social and environmental factors in addition to the indispensable defence dimension.
The Alliance should also be prepared to support, on the basis of separable but not separate capabilities, operations under the political control and strategic direction either of the WEU or as otherwise agreed.

 Alliance Law
If an alliance is like a galleon setting out on a new voyage, then the most creative lawyers will make her seaworthy, steady and sturdy, but able to fly with the winds of chance.
Since most breakthrough strategic alliances are planned with a 5-year horizon, there is ample time to allow flexibility in the rules for gain sharing and risk allocation.
The ability of an alliance to deal effectively with its differences is a resource of inestimable value, because it gives the parties time and space to focus all their energies in conceiving, nourishing, and bringing forth their creative work together.
