Strategy of tension - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The strategy of tension (Italian: strategia della tensione) is a way to control and manipulate public opinion using fear, propaganda, disinformation, psychological warfare, agents provocateurs, false flag terrorism actions and even terroristic actions.
In 2000, a Parliamentary report from the Olive Tree coalition concluded that the strategy of tension followed by Gladio had been supported by the United States to "stop the PCI, and to a certain degree also the PSI [Italian Socialist Party], from reaching executive power in the country".
General Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa's murder, in 1982, by the mafia in Palermo is allegedly part of the strategy of tension.

Operation Gladio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, whether these allegations are correct or not, his murder in 1978 put an end to the “historic compromise” (sharing of power) between the PCI and the Christian Democracy (DC), thus accomplishing one of the declared objectives of the Gladio’s strategy of tension.
Examples of such terrorist acts include the strategy of tension in Italy, the Oktoberfest bomb blast of 1980 in Munich, or the Brabant massacres in Belgium.
After being useful for the strategy of tension followed by Kenan Evren, the leader of the Counter-Guerrilla turned president outlawed the right-wing Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the Grey Wolves, its youth organization.

Strategy of Tension: The Case of Italy
The beginning of the strategy of tension is officially marked by the Dec. 12, 1969 bomb that exploded inside the Banca Nazionale dell' Agricoltura in Milan's Piazza Fontana, known as "the Piazza Fontana massacre," in which 16 people were killed and 58 wounded.
The end of the strategy of tension, strictly considered, is marked by the bomb on the "Italicus" train (Aug. 4, 1974) in San Benedetto Val di Sambro, which killed 12 and wounded 105.
From the standpoint of the "strategy of tension," the purpose of such a large terrorist attack should have been to produce a situation similar to the state of emergency which the Rumor government was supposed to declare after the 1969 Piazza Fontana bombing.

The Next Hurrah: Berlusconi's Strategy of Tension
"I want to invite the premier to lower his tone and stop what appears to be a real strategy of tension, an undermining of the electoral victory that increases the bitterness," Massimo D'Alema, leader of the Democrats of the Left, said in a interview published the Corriere della Sera.
The term "strategy of tension" hearkens back, of course, to Italian neo-fascist efforts during the 1970s and 1980s to destabilize the government by sowing a culture of fear.
It appears that he'll have to settle for the corollary of the "strategy of tension".

Some Press Point to Strategy of Tension
The newsletter defined "strategy of tension" as a "campaign aimed at provoking the collapse of law and order and, as a side effect, provoking a crisis of confidence in the citizens vis-a-vis their democratically-elected governments, creating thus the conditions for a takeover by the army," or towards the more authoritarian parties.
It came to be known as the 'strategy of tension' and its aim was to carry out acts of terrorism which could be blamed, not on right-wing extremists, but on radical left-wing groups.
The attacks were part of what was then called the "Strategy of Tension" to prevent the participation of the Italian Communist Party in a coalition government, by a right-wing state coup.

The third common succession strategy — shifting the chief executive to chairman of the board while promoting a second individual, from inside or outside, to the CEO position — provides another example of a seemingly prudent idea whose benefits are illusory.
If you bring in an active CEO from another company (the “beggar thy neighbor” strategy), performance may or may not improve (it’s too new a strategy to tell), but you may be contributing to the decline of your national or regional economy.

I'm a technology writer with The Globe and Mail in Toronto, and this is where I blog about things I come across on the Web.
Like a lot of people (judging by the links at memeorandum) I read the New York Times story on MySpace with interest, since it and Facebook are probably the poster-children for the whole online “social networking” phenomenon, or whatever you want to call it.
And it’s also interesting that the NYT article mentions that DeWolfe got the idea for MySpace from Friendster, the former poster child for social networking — and yet the piece never mentions that Friendster flamed out and was replaced by MySpace virtually overnight.

The chapter focuses on the agitated Italian public debate that followed when Vinciguerra exposed the so called “strategy of tension” through which members of the secret stay-behind armies and the military secret services had manipulated the public through terrorism.
The secret armies supplied right wing terrorists with explosives to carry out terrorist attacks on the Italian population who were thereafter blamed on the communist party and the political left in general in order to discredit the political opponent.
It describes the tactics and strategies used, including the “strategy of tension” as presented in the Field Manual FM 30-31B: "There may be times when Host Country Governments show passivity or indecision in the face of communist subversion and according to the interpretation of the US secret services do not react with sufficient effectiveness.

For example, it was this intention that almost certainly lay behind the behavior of the Aznar government in Spain in the wake of the Synarchist terror bombing in Madrid March 11.
The Synarchist resurgence signalled by Madrid, meant a return to that "strategy of tension" which had characterized the period 1969-80 in Italy, when "rightwing" terrorism masqueraded as "leftwing" terrorism, in an effort to destroy the government and impose fascism in its stead.
The new Special Report studies in depth these and other aspects of the Synarchist phenomenon in the 20th and now the 21st centuries, providing an extraordinarily detailed handbook for those trying to understand, and intervene against, present-day Synarchist machinations.
