Stratford station was opened in 1839 by the Eastern Counties Railway (ECR).
London Buses routes 25, 69, 86, 104, 108, 158, 238, 241, 257, 262, 276, 308, 473, D8 and S2 and coach route A7 (to Stansted Airport) serve the station.

In 1847 the land was open country outside London, and Stratford was built as a 'new town' initially called "Hudson' Town" after George Hudson the railway entrepreneur and it was the location of the Eastern Counties Railway's railway works.
Stratford station and adjacent bus station is a major transport hub.
From 2007 Stratford will be the location of Stratford International station on the Channel Tunnel rail link and in 2012 the location of the main Olympic Park, which will contain a significant number of venues to be used in the 2012 Summer Olympics, including the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre, and London Velopark.

Generally Stratford is safe, especially in the centre, as long as you use normal common sense.
I've lived in Stratford for 8 years and things haven't changed that much so far, apart from the property prices; there are lots of new luxury flats that have opened /will open soon that I fear will yuppify the place more, but I can't see Wilko and Poundland being bought out just yet.
Stratfords location to Canary Wharf is excellent and hardly a reason to doubt because of this Stratford has not changed.

I live on Albert Square, I was drawn to it as it was a quiet street and had a mixture of housing as well as a topical name..

London's bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games has received a boost with the approval of a £3.5bn development in east London.
The Stratford City development adjoins the proposed Olympic Park and would provide housing for athletes in 2012.
The announcement was welcomed by bid leader Sebastian Coe, who said: "The green light for Stratford City gives a further boost to our bid to host the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

The name Stratford means 'Ford where the Roman Road crosses the river' and was at one time the first small village outside London on the main road to Colchester.
An Abbey was founded between them at Stratford Langthorne by William de Montfichet as long ago as 1134 and, as with other locations further up the river, mills were constructed here using the power of the Lea.
When slaughter houses were banned from London in the 14th century because of the noise associated with them, they moved alongside the mills of Stratford and Bow.

Stratford is rather poorly served by train, better, perhaps, by bus.
Stratford had less to see and is more crowded (drove through it this summer and it was so packed we didn't even stop, I'd been there before but was going to show it to my husband).
Stratford is closer to more of the Cotswold towns but if you won't have a car then that doesn't really matter.
