Stratford was roughly halfway between London and Birmingham, therefore it was an ideal location for the repeater station, as early long-distance telephone circuits had to be amplified around every 50 miles.
What made it of local interest was the fact it was one of the first repeater stations to be built in this country, and the two large single cylinder heavy oil engines that were installed there to generate the electricity required by the apparatus.

We need the international station at Stratford, not just because it would be good for the area but because it is the key to the regeneration of that part of east London, through the Thames corridor and into the south-east of England.
If the Government's commitment to a station at Stratford were to be abandoned, not only would there be none of the regeneration which the Secretary of State promised, but there would be a sucking away of investment which might have been attracted to east London and which would instead relocate to the M25 and Ebbsfleet.
Although we are enthusiastic for the station at Stratford, we are not unmindful of the fact that environmental considerations are involved.
