Stratford was originally a market town, and this picture shows the market place at the town centre.
One mile from Stratford, across what were originally fields, lies the hamlet (small village) of Shottery, and the home of Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare's sweet-heart and wife.
There are good views from the obelisk, though the view over Stratford itself is disappointing, as much of the town is hidden by trees from this direction.

The name Stratford means 'Ford where the Roman Road crosses the river' and was at one time the first small village outside London on the main road to Colchester.
An Abbey was founded between them at Stratford Langthorne by William de Montfichet as long ago as 1134 and, as with other locations further up the river, mills were constructed here using the power of the Lea.
Although locomotive and coach building ceased when the LNER was formed in the 1920's, Stratford has always been a large railway repair depot, maintaining steam, then diesel and electric locomotives for over 150 years.
